With ANZAC Day coming up.

If lock-down level 4 comes off people are going to have to make some tough individual decisions on how they commemorate.

How does that work under Level 3 , and should one push the letter of the level 3 rules to the limit.

Just because you can have certain types of gatherings , or under social distancing should we call them 'scatterings'

Is that the best and most sensible way to handle ?

It isn't tough. Stay at home. I thought national events were already cancelled anyway?

I doubt that people who died in a war would actually be put out that people did not stand around outside potentially exacerbating a pandemic which threatened life and livelihood.

True, should be that way Geektastic, but people are funny.
Like the joy of those arriving on International flights minutes before the 14 day self quarantine that they were free.
Really why not be sensible and isolate anyway.

Then there is the usual migration to holiday spots that's been pent up.

This is one of the reasons that I think we will probably go from Level 4 to Level 3 in the early morning of Tuesday 28th April, as it leaves ANZAC day and the Monday-ised ANZAC day Statutory Holiday under L4 lockdown.

Honest to goodness, who cares about ANZAC Day right now? There shouldn't be anything that unnecessarily gathers up a crowd, especially not for a event that is basically just some kind of unquestioned "tradition".

Fully agree. I hope that there is an inquest of sorts over these clusters. Not so much a blame game, but actually it is a blame game. Just so we can look at each event or cluster and decide that it was unavoidable, or if not was avoidable, what did anyone, from PM, MoH, and any group or individual do that allowed infection to occur. So we can close those loopholes in future. It could something as minor as TDGeek felt a bit crook, but not too bad, but went anyway. Blame is the wrong word, but we need to find who was to blame, so we can add that loophole to the Pandemic Plan. Its certainly not inconceivable that another outbreak occurs next year, or 2025, it can happen anytime. We should have a great deal of learnings from this year.

I do not really understand this modern idea that blame is a bad thing. Blame = responsibility.

Surely responsibility is a necessary thing in this world? Both on a personal level and on a local/national administrative level.

I think the biggest learning should be that if/when this happens again, the border is sealed tighter than a duck's behind MUCH sooner so that we do not suffer the economic fallout to such a great degree.

Surely responsibility is a necessary thing in this world?

As has been spoken of earlier in this large topic, whether young or old there will always be the selfish and those that think they are 'entitled'. "I am not going to get it, but if I am going to get it, then I am going to get it and If I am going to die, then I am going to die".

In my case I'll be having a cup of tea with my (retired) former serviceman neighbour, him on his deck, me on the lawn below, BYO tea and cup. Since many others who'd otherwise attend ANZAC day are similarly in the high-risk category, if you know someone like that consider commemorating it that way.

In any case it was mostly cancelled after the shootings, so we've done a low-profile one before.

I've been to a number of ANZAC day services (see my previous post) and firstly they're not that massive an event, the biggest one in the centre of Auckland has maybe a few hundred people (not included the participants like bands, current servicemen, etc), and secondly the attendees are ex-military and military families, not random yobbos at a beach party. If they're told to stay home one would expect they'd follow the order.

I think you'd be surprised, veterans (especially the older kind) can be very stubborn and I've seen quite a few that are angry at the thought of their special day being restricted. No talking sense into some people.

New York Times articles mentioning New Zealand

UK Virus Deaths Top 10,000 as Leader Johnson Leaves Hospital

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his gratitude to the staff of the National Health Service for saving his life when his treatment for the coronavirus could have “gone either way" as the U.K. on Sunday became the fourth European country to surpass 10,000 virus-related deaths.

...The prime minister said the nurses he identified as Jenny from Invercargill on New Zealand's South Island and Luis from Portugal were the reason that “in the end, my body did start to get enough oxygen.”

Commodity Currencies Fall as OPEC+ Output Cuts Fail to Allay Demand Anxiety

Commodity currencies slipped against their safe-haven rivals such as the dollar and yen on Monday as a record output cut agreed by OPEC and other oil producing nations failed to offset broader concerns about slumping global demand.

The greenback drifted higher against its Australian and New Zealand counterparts, widely seen as barometers for market risk, in a sign investors remain concerned about the consumption outlook for commodities.

Financial markets remain on edge over the spread of the novel coronavirus as severe restrictions on personal movement drag the global economy into a deep recession.

..Trading could be somewhat subdued as financial markets in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Britain are closed for the Easter Monday holiday.

Major oil producers agreed to the output cuts on Sunday to prop up oil markets as the pandemic severely curtailed global demand.

Oil prices had gone into freefall on worries about the virus and a price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia, which was seen straining the budgets of oil producers and hammering the U.S. shale industry.

...The New Zealand dollar fell 0.21% to $0.6072 as investors shunned risky trades.

I am from a family with a lot of folk who served/serving in the military. Many served in harm's way, were injured or were POWs. There is no way any of them would want to see folks putting themselves and others in harms way.
The decision to not hold public commerations was the only and right decision to make. This does not stop folks remembering them in private in their bubbles.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

So, at the end, Boris Johnson was saved by immigrants?

Ironic.

Washington Post: The Latest: China sees 108 new virus cases, mostly imported

The Latest on the coronavirus pandemic. The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.

TOP OF THE HOUR:
  • China reports 108 new cases of coronavirus, including 98 from people returning from other countries

  • Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe criticized on social media for ‘stay home’ message

  • New Zealand reports fifth death, 19 new cases of coronavirus

  • Chinese mask producer rushing to meet demands from overseas amid stricter inspections

  • Death toll in France nearly 14,400. But for the fourth day in a row, slightly fewer people were admitted into intensive care.

  • Italy has its lowest number of new deaths in three weeks, saying 431 people died in the past day to bring its total to 19,899.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- New Zealand recorded its fifth death from COVID-19 but only 19 new cases Monday as the rate of fresh infections continues to show signs of diminishing.

The latest death, of a man in his 80s, was the third connected with a rest home in Christchurch where several residents and staff are infected.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said 546 people in New Zealand have recovered from the viral illness as the number of people recovering outstrips the number of new infections.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told reporters that New Zealanders cannot expect an early end to the lockdown that includes a ban on public gatherings.

Ardern said people who broke social distancing rules over the Easter holiday weekend put lives at risk.

“It could take one case amongst you to lead to dozens of infections and possibly death,” she said.

Enough Japan citizens are not cooperating, that I'd expect some very bad news soon.

Washington Post: Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe criticized on social media for ‘stay home’ message

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s “stay home” message he tweeted Sunday has drawn angry reactions on social networks from those calling him insensitive to people who cannot rest at home because of the government’s social distancing measures that do not come with compensation.

Some tweets said he acted as if “an aristocrat,” and others said “What does he think he is!”

A one-minute video shows Abe sitting at home, expressionless, cuddling his dog, reading a book, sipping from a cup and clicking on a remote control. The video, on a split screen, features a popular singer and actor Gen Hoshino strumming on a guitar at home, but later posted on his Instagram that his clip was used without his permission.

Abe declared a state of emergency in Tokyo and six other prefectures last Tuesday, asking the people to stay home and reduce human interactions by as much as 80%, but many Japanese companies are slow to switch to remote-working and many people were seen commuting even after the declaration.

As of Sunday, Japan had 7,255 confirmed cases, as well as 712 other cases from a cruise ship quarantined earlier this year.

Do yourself a favour and do some research.

Here is one example: Boris Johnson faces backlash and claims of racism after saying migrants should not ‘treat UK as their own

PS: If we want to continue discussing UK and immigration, I suggest we move that part of the discussion to the politics forum.
