Mountain biking is allowed. Easy rules. No motorised. Dont start a new hobby like surfing. Do it alone. Its not that vague. Or they list every conceivable activity?

So anything with with an electric motor is out. Hmmm I need to replace my E-bike with a Harley Davidson and garage my chair.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

My main concern is the fact that Kindergartens will re-open and people will use them like daycares (as they always have), but with the changes to the way that Auckland Kindies are accepting kids, there's now kids in nappies, special needs kids and lots of kids with little or no education on what to do when they sneeze, cough etc...

So when my wife goes back to work, she'll be once again getting covered in snot, being expected to look after other bubbles' precious tykes and all of their excretions...while being told by the authorities that they do not require PPE and they should practice social distancing!

Hmm...I can see all of us getting sick at some point in the next few weeks...I guess at least my kids are able to remain at home for school and I am already working from home.

So, surfing is allowed but yachting (which in NZ parlance generally covers all sail boating) isn't.

Do you have a link to no yachting?  The rule is no motorised machines. Powerboats, jetski's etc.

From the govt site: "If you are an experienced surfer, you can go to your local break. If you’re not experienced, don’t surf. If you want to go fishing you can do so from a wharf or the shore, but don’t cast off the rocks or fish from a boat (boating is not allowed). Tramping is ok for day walks on easy trails, same for mountain biking if you are experienced and know the trail. Please be aware of maintaining two metres distance from other people."

So, boating is not allowed but surfing is.  I can go out into the break on my surfboard (can I do this in a kayak, is a kayak a boat?) but I can't go out for a gentle sail in my yacht.

I can't see the logic in this.  I can only assume that surfers are in Labour's key demographic but rich pricks with yachts aren't (conspiracy theory alert level 2.5!)

how many surfers have you heard of off that need a search and rescue operation to find them, Yachts on the other hand

You obviously missed the news reporting of the surfers getting rescued at Sumner in the first few days of lockdown

Yachts on the other hand, used safely in inshore and coastal waters are inherently safe and have multiple forms of propulsion, good communications and safety equipment

Ok no boating, thanks. I guess boats can sink. Surfboards cant and you are nearer the shore I suppose. No boats is certainly not vague. A kayak is a boat. They could say that recreation is still at Level 4 levels to make it easier, but the purpose is to allow a bit more freedom with a stance towards safety, i.e. can fish from shore but not rocks. Im still searching for golf. Under the published rules,

  • Low risk local recreation activities are allowed.

Read elsewhere that no gatherings, cant meet up with a mate, so golf seems ok if playing alone.

A Harley has a motor, but actually it might be exempt, there is a reason that Harley Davidson never quotes HP ratings...

I guess that means that eScooters are out too? I think we need to use common sense, there is a vast difference between an eBike and a Jetski/Powerboat for safety reasons.

My point was that they are loud and slow. They have a following but not because of the performance.

A minor qualification re the '15' new cases yesterday.  The MOH website shows the Marist College cluster dropped from 93 to 92 cases on 16 Apr.  A footnote explains that "A decrease in numbers is due to probable cases being reclassified as not a case" (note plural 'cases'?).  There was a net increase of 15 cases reported for the day.  But since at least one (& possibly more) earlier probable cases are now considered not COVID-19 infections, it seems there must have been at least 16 new cases today, not 15?

Unfortunately MOH do not make it easy due to the rather basic individual case data they provide (& frequently changes/reordering of the data).  But from a laborious check through the case data it appears two cases in the 15 Apr dataset have been dropped in the 16 Apr dataset.  If so, there were actually 17 new cases yesterday, minus two older cases removed = net +15 change.

Also as someone mentioned a page or two back, the numbers released yesterday are mostly cases confirmed a day or two before, from tests performed a day or two before that; ie. will mostly be cases tested ~12 - 13 April.  That coincides with the lull in testing over Easter (average of only ~1600 tests on the 12th & 13th).

This is actually a good example of why conspiracy theories are so beguiling. Rational people will respond to this with "wow, that's a surprise" (as the reporter did), "we'll have to wait and see what the explanation is". Conspiracy-theory nuts will instantly have the explanation for it: China, 5G signals, the WHO, the deep state, illegal immigrants, Hillary Clinton, fake news, take your pick.

Totally agree. The journalist/creative writer totally made up the extrapolation. Birthing mothers are not a random sample. They are all share common experiences. I would say it is possible that there are covid19 positive midwives infecting clients, or contaminated ambulances, or they are being infected at reception at the hospital itself. They need to do contact tracing on the infected mothers before any extrapolation is done. This story is worthy of Fox news. Its no wonder why more and more people prefer to get their news from Karen on Facebook.
