Fred99:

The Church of England has urged congregations to incorporate “simple precautions” at services to reduce the risk of infection from coronavirus.

In new guidance issued on Thursday, the church said current Government advice did not suggest that the sharing of a “common cup” during Holy Communion services should be suspended.

Long-standing government advice has been that ‘In a pandemic, it makes good sense to take precautions to limit the spread of disease by not sharing common vessels for food and drink.’ COVID-19 has NOT been declared a pandemic,” the guidance published on the church website said.

So they issue masks at the door and then have an extra Alter Boy after the Blood of Christ and before the Bread of Christ handing the priest, after each sip, a Dettol Wipe; ๐Ÿท+๐Ÿงป+๐Ÿž+๐Ÿ™

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

So new round of travel bans, Are we banning Korea? Nope, Japan? Nope, Italy? Nope. It's Iran!

Which probably explains your earlier question,

the  number of people who come to NZ are tiny, but If we are seeing a case with symptons here, gawd knows what it must be like in countries with higher travel numbers...

From: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/119899280/ministry-of-health-gives-latest-update-on-novel-coronavirus

(Due to the suspected case from Iran, and info from that Country - or lack of)

"Temporary restrictions will be placed on travel from Iran as a precaution and New Zealand will not allow any exemptions for overseas students from China to enter the country.

The decision around an exemption for international Chinese tertiary students was in line with treating China as a "category one" country.

The measures against Iran were made not just because of the increasing number of cases there, but concerns about the quality of information coming out of Iran. Iran's healthcare system was struggling to cope with quite a widespread outbreak, Bloomfield said."

Yeah that's still a bit of a cop out, Korea's in the same boat and we get 5k+/mth in tourists from there. Banning the country AFTER we've got a cause it too little too late, For boarder controls to be effective they must be deploy in an even manner

Iran has a very real (and understated) problem with Covid-19 ...

The New York Times - Iran Vice President Is One of 7 Officials to Contract Coronavirus

These officials include the Vice President; the deputy health minister who had been leading the effort to contain the coronavirus; and the head of coronavirus management in Qom.

NZ apparently now has it's first suspected case, is someone who came from Iran earlier in the week is in hospital. Anyone else coming in from Iran has been told to self isolate, which  I imagine is very difficult to do.  Filtering people at the border doesn't appear to be effective at stopping this getting in. IMO we need to be looking at restricting  visitors from at least all affected countries, if we want to try and keep it out of NZ. I am not sure if that is what happens if it reaches 'pandemic stage'?. There is so much we don't know about this virus, and whether it is mutating, and I would have thought it would be safer to act on the side of caution. People testing positive after they have recovered is also a concern. But also is the high number of people that need hospitalization and respirators, it is on a significantly higher magnitude than normal flu. I wonder if there is a lot we are not being told?

Based on the official numbers, the death rate over there appears to be more than 10% ATM

Confirmed that NZ has a case - tested positive.

NZ citizen - just returned from Iran. Glad the case was picked up - lets see how we do with contact tracing / testing from the flight.

The sheer magnitude of the internal restrictions imposed within China makes me doubt the accuracy of their reporting, particularly the mortality rate

But was it picked up because he was so ill that he needed hospitalization. It appears they have been in NZ for at least a few days. Anyone on that flight should probably be quarantined, as that was the process for those who were on the Wuhan flight, and those people hadn't necessarily been in intensive contact with anyone with the illness, whereas those people on this flight have been in contact with that person who has tested positive. I don't think self isolation for people on that flight is enough in this case.

I didn't think NZ would get it's first case this quickly, based in the precautions in place, so looks like they fell through the gap.

Well it's clearly completely out of control in Iran - but the extent of how bad the situation there is hasn't been known for long.

I'd hoped we'd be clear for longer too - but that's the luck of the draw.  It's in at least 60 countries now - so it was inevitable we'd have cases.
