Technofreak:

Why are we paying? Surely the person arriving should be paying. More of our taxes being being spent unnecessarily.

How ridiculous.  The tax payer is funding it because the government changed the rules of coming back home.  Its not opt-in, and no rational government could one day increase the cost of returning to your home country by thousands of dollars.  What do you suggest people do?  Overstay their visas and start stealing food and living on the streets of foreign countries?

I am surprised that we dont have rules around leaving the country and costs associated with returning shortly thereafter.  In other words we should be stamping out the revolving door loophole, although I am not sure there are many people actually doing this.

New York Times: What the Pandemic Reveals About the Male Ego. Why are the rates of coronavirus deaths far lower in many female-led countries?

By Nicholas Kristof

Are female leaders better at fighting a pandemic?

I compiled death rates from the coronavirus for 21 countries around the world, 13 led by men and eight by women. The male-led countries suffered an average of 214 coronavirus-related deaths per million inhabitants. Those led by women lost only one-fifth as many, 36 per million.

If the United States had the coronavirus death rate of the average female-led country, 102,000 American lives would have been saved out of the 114,000 lost.

“Countries led by women do seem to be particularly successful in fighting the coronavirus,” noted Anne W. Rimoin, an epidemiologist at U.C.L.A. “New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Norway have done so well perhaps due to the leadership and management styles attributed to their female leaders.”
...
“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that some of the best-run places have been run by women: New Zealand, Germany, Taiwan,” mused Susan Rice, who was national security adviser under President Barack Obama. “And where we’ve seen things go most badly wrong — the U.S., Brazil, Russia, the U.K. — it’s a lot of male ego and bluster.”

Those leaders who handled the virus best were those who humbly consulted public health experts and acted quickly, and many were women; in contrast, male authoritarians who botched the response were suspicious of experts and too full of themselves.
...
“I really get it,” Trump said when he visited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March. Surrounded by medical experts, he added, “Maybe I have natural ability,” and he wondered aloud if he should have become a scientist.

(Given that Trump said in January that Covid-19 was “totally under control,” he has his answer. And peer review might not have been kind to his ideas about bleach.)

Washington Post: Fans savor return of stadium sport in virus-free New Zealand

By Nick Perry | AP

...New Zealand on Saturday became one of the first nations in the world to welcome hordes of fans back into a packed sports stadium, thanks to the country’s remarkable success in eliminating the coronavirus.

As countries try to reopen after lockdowns, the evening rugby match marked a milestone of sorts, and its importance wasn’t lost on fans.

After instituting a strict lockdown in March, New Zealand has not reported any new cases of the coronavirus for more than three weeks, and says all those who contracted the disease have now recovered. Earlier in the week, the country removed just about every remaining virus restriction, with the notable exception of keeping the border closed.

"If you cut their legs off, they go deaf".

This is reversing cause and effect. If you re-word the title as "Why are the rates of coronavirus deaths far lower in countries that will elect a female leader rather than a neverending succession of wealthy old white men?" then it answers itself.

Yep. Costs are insane. $800k for a broken leg isn't unheard of either. NZers would be crazy to not board a plane home at those rates. Certainly my plan.

Healthcare quality is bad here too, as everyone waits till they are critically ill to go to the hospital. I waited three hours in a waiting room, which resulted in unrecoverable loss of a body part AKA if I returned home I'd have to have some cosmetic/reconstructive surgery - which I don't want to risk here.

Doctors are also paid to peddle addictive drugs i.e.opioids, as they get some kind of commission or the hospital does. Go to a doctor here and you'll walk out with 5 to 10 bottles of drugs.

Edit: Looks like in this case the cost at the patient end will be minimal in comparison to the total bill, even though the bill is insane.

Totally unnecessary ageist and racial stereotyping. Stupidity cannot be stereotyped in this way and in the case of many countries who have had female leaders (such as the UK), just not true.

Not ageist or racist at all. Also, UK - female leader?

The original post quoted a neverending succession of wealthy old white men.  The UK has had a couple of female prime ministers; Obama in the US is not white. Both not a neverending succession of wealthy old white men.

Make it "almost neverending" succession.... etc - and that's close enough
