Every other outbreak has burnt out or diluted itseof so it becomes part of the normal flu cycle. Why would this one be any different?

It's not.

"Spanish flu" was similar, now H1N1 is the seasonal flu.  The process / pandemic where the disease "ran its course" was pretty ugly though - ~50 million deaths (countless - nobody knows the exact figure).

Most of the "mild" contagious diseases we humans get probably started in that way.

Im hopeful this one wont reach those dizzy heights. China as one example is seeing infection growth slow. But they did have extreme quarantine measures, but they also have arguably less capable healthcare, and more difficulty coping with the volume of at risk people. Italy will be interesting to watch, they have a serious outbreak, they are quarantining in what seems to be an aggressive manner. I get the feeling that the fatality rate is declining as time goes on? Its high in Hubei, lower in the rest of China and the overseas figures you quoted today, that seems lower at 1.7% (variable reporting though?)

To me the key is tracing contacts. We dont seek to be doing much of that here. It seems more cursory than complete. If they can do that well in Italy that will help hugely, although they do seem to have a handle on where and who to quarantine. There is a number, where we cant check all the contacts, as too many, thats when it can get out of control. You end up following it, rather than running close behind and trying to head it off at the pass

@Rikkitic we went into our supermarket to get some supplies and many were out of stock. Many of the stock items were illogical such as Cornflakes, Lacto Free milk, toilet paper shelves were nearly empty (had to buy the horrible dusty ones) went past the water self and couldn't believe that it was all but empty. Do folk think the Virus will dry up our tap supply.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I think some people have seen it as an opportunity to prepare for a variety of disasters. Those who have gone out to panic buy evidently didn't have a good emergency supply to begin with - which is fairly important depending on where you live in New Zealand.

We have some hand sanitiser, just our usual supply. We keep a bottle at the front door, one in the car, one in the kitchen and one in each of the first aid kits and CD bags. When we use that up I will make our own.

When my wife worked for a certain IT/Phone maker she was travelling every week in NZ and abroad and she developed this habit of collecting soap and sundries from the Hotels she stayed at. I swear we have enough hand soap to last us until the rapture. I was going to use them in the Motorhome but may have to use them for general washing at home.

I saw a headline last week that in essence stated that 40% of the worlds population will be affected by COVID-19 however, diving deep into the article it was the opinion of one person with no corroborating analysis or evidence.

I'm shocked and can't believe my eyes. This may very well break the Internet.

But, depending on your definition of "affected", I'd suggest that well over 40% of the world's population has already been affected.

In the context of the article "affected" meant contracted the virus which is probably BS.

They're probably just reading up guidelines for natural disaster emergency supply.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

It's not.  Probably more than 40% will eventually become infected (if that is what you mean by "affected") unless it's contained.  There's zero immunity (probably) in the human race and it's highly contagious, so epidemiological modeling suggests it won't "fizzle out" until around 60% of the population either has it - or had it and are (hopefully) immune.

Im picking it might include white vinegar, and maybe tea tree oil, or some form of plant/flower oil

I don't agree that Chinese healthcare system was/is "less capable".  In developed areas they had (before the outbreak) about the same number of hospital beds per 1,000 population as we have here.  They went to extreme measures to make very many more available very quickly.  That's for the ~20% needing intervention, oxygen, monitoring, secondary infection treatment/prophylaxis etc.

Maybe they are "less capable" in terms of availability of high tech equipment for critical care - I don't know.  But for "ordinary" hospital treatment that wasn't needed - and if it gets out of control anywhere, they'll run out of beds and equipment very fast.  I did read that they'd sent 60 "extra" ECMO machines from Shanghai to Wuhan.  I think someone with knowledge posted information that NZ only has (6? less than 10?) ECMO machines for the entire country.

My point in raising this article was the headline was in a large bold font aimed at click bait. The article was an opinion piece that provided no evidence or citation and this sort of careless revenue seeking "journalism" can contribute to panic buying. I was not making a statement as to if the article was an accurate prediction and hence my comment "probably BS"

Given the gravity of this situation the news media needs to become a lot more professional and use caution and common sense when publishing articles especially opinion pieces. On that note the government needs to lift its game. Right now they seem more concerned about the economic impact than the human impact or limiting the spread of the disease in NZ.

A easily made sanitiser can be made from mixing isopropyl alcohol and something like aloe vera gel. Purple Methylated spirits can also be used instead of isopropyl alcohol but I would suggest not recommended for smokers.
