Yes correct, Covid 19 Pandemic = global disaster. And as per my post, NZ has done a good job so far at working its way through the disaster.

3 cases today, all from India. Maybe they should be putting all people from Covid hotspots such as India, Pakistan, UK, and US, in actual quarantine hotels, which are more strict. I am guessing the cost of each person that tests positive is significantly higher to manage and accommodate, than someone who is place in a self isolation hotel and is clear of the virus. .

Also someone escaping from a self isolation facility is terrible. I understand it also means the police officers that were involved now have to isolate as well. That will result in a huge cost because they now can't work. Luckily we have found some of the holes in our self isolation facilities before it was too late, unlike Australia, where Covid has slipped through the holes in the border.

Yep, but we were allowed to booze when it was safe, UK is still riddled. All they are doing is A) so what too late now drink and infect or B) evoke a Level 4 for 28 days, so after that it can be managed.

Many businesses won't be able to operate this way, as it won't be affordable, and they will need to operate this way for a long time, unless they go back into lockdown.

Hairdressers over in the UK not wearing masks as per the video is also a worry, I wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

I got a haircut a few weeks ago for he first time in months, and the person cutting my hair was coughing and spluttering, which always makes me feel uneasy. They were not wearing a mask or shield but I felt comfortable knowing that we are covid free.

I re-read the replies for this and I think he meant "disaster" as in the border control, not the "whole covid-19 pandemic". And I believe the reply "Yeap totally agree, but I am sure the big money earners in Wellington can use their skills to work out something. So far they seem to have done a good job with working their way through this disaster." is sarcastic and political.

No you have misinterpreted it. It wasn't being sarcastic political , because how could it be?. NZ is Covid free, and NZ is one of only a few countries that are, so the stats speak for themselves. As per Frankv, Disaster refers to the Global Covid pandemic, which is a disaster on a global scale. As per my post NZ decision makers have done a good job at at working it's way through the disaster, as it continues to rage outside the border. I don't think anyone can dispute that they haven't done a good job so far.

Managed isolation

If people do not have symptoms of COVID-19 on arrival, they will be placed in a managed isolation facility. They may not leave their facility unless they have applied for and received an exemption from isolation from health officials. However, they can go for walks under the condition they do not have contact with other people in the community"

So the government is still trusting people to do the right thing. Have seen how that's worked out in past.

I get that but you need to check the law. Yes we have seen him thats worked in the last, globally, its not a NZ issue. Human nature.

I don't understand not NZ issue, if people in managed isolation can walk round in public that is NZ issue, as chance these people have virus and can undo all our work.

On TV news tonight it had that she jumped a fence and that it's not easy to get out of grounds of isolation facility so looks like MoH website needs updating.

Also said she could face 6 months imprisonment and or a $4000 fine.

She is now facing a charge breach of section 26(1) of the COVID-19 Public Health Response Act 2020 and has been summonsed to appear before the Auckland District Court as soon as her managed isolation is finished.

We in NZ have options and capabilities that the USA doesn't have.

I think it is partly because that they acted too late, so the cost to now do anything about it, or even slow it down, is going to cost far too much. NZ did it, because we acted relatively fast before it got a foot hold in the community, with a high level of compliance. Also being a smaller country, and the government being more open to different experts advice from our Universities helped.

@mattwnz the Melbourne outbreak may not be attributable to border controls, as far as I know Australia never achieved elimination so it could simply be a community outbreak from existing infection rather than a new arrival

In regards to the UK I predict community outbreaks as has occurred in Melbourne and note now also Spain who has reimposed a full lock down of 200K people in the Lleida area. It is becoming apparent where lock downs are lifted or relaxed and no elimination has been achieved there will be outbreaks

It will be interesting to see if local lock downs work on preventing contagion, that learning will allow NZ to be more informed

@rugrat and @Oblivian good to hear they will throw the book at her, claiming you were are drunk on the tax payer provider wine in isolation and 'accidentally' leaving the facility is quite different to deliberately absconding including climbing a fence (if that is what occurred)

So the government is still trusting people to do the right thing. Have seen how that's worked out in past.

Today I talked to a friend who recently returned from the UK. He went through managed isolation at the Novotel. There was a prescribed route for their walk. Not out in the community, but around the hotel. When he deviated from the prescribed route, a policeman told him to go back or be arrested.

So it's perhaps not quite as the media portray it.

My friend who recently returned home via the Novotel mandatory isolation said that alcohol was *not* provided free. You could buy alcohol from the hotel, at hotel prices ($28 for a cheap bottle of wine). You couldn't even get it delivered.

Good to hear and good point since this women absconded under the new improved isolation/quarantine regime

I'm fairly sure inclusive? alcohol was available (a limit of 1 bottle a day?) in the 'loosey goosey' isolation days before Tues 16th when the sh*t hit hit the fan with the two women testing positive after getting compassionate leave. I have no doubt under the new improved isolation/quarantine alcohol won't be at tax payer expense. Thank you for providing that clarification and correction :)

Minister Woods was quite clear about the "absconder" woman on the news this evening.

The woman went into the prescribed outdoor exercise area, scaled the fence and was away on her toes.
This is not a lapse in security, it's a deliberate and premeditated decision to "do a runner". I don't think it's reasonable to have to surround a 'managed isolation' exercise area with razor wire, searchlights and guards: it's 'managed isolation', not even "quarantine", let alone Paremoremo Maximum Security.

AIUI, the maximum penalty id 6 months imprisonment and/or a $4000 fine. Both would be well deserved

Human nature and what it does is not a NZ issue its everywhere. But we cant chain people to a hotel bedroom nor can we allocate one Police Officer per one person

We do need to start racking up fines though.
