freitasm:

Then what? If a New Zealand citizen test positive would you prevent the person from boarding? Would you leave the citizen stranded on the other side? Because that's what National wants to do.

This has been happening for some time with reduced and cancelled flights due to quarantine capacity. What's the practical difference?

A citizen being temporarily stranded because of flight capacity, cancelled flights or quarantine capacity is way different from blocking a citizen to come back.

Citizens are currently prevented from coming back if they are sick. You are not meant to fly. Once they are not sick then they can travel.

@concordnz: Other countries are requiring Tests before flying.

It's a perfectly acceptable strategy.

If we can reduce the number of infected coming into the country - we significantly reduce the border risk & protect our people & economy.

Then what? If a New Zealand citizen test positive would you prevent the person from boarding? Would you leave the citizen stranded on the other side? Because that's what National wants to do.

And what if a person is tested three days before flying? Would the policy still require a 14 day quarantine even with a negative test?

Did they think the whole thing through?

I think it would have to be treated on a case by case basis based in circumstance, but people shouldn't fly when sick anyway. I am not sure if that is in the airlines terms and conditions or not.  We need to look at what other countries are doing that require it, as it looks like this is becoming standard practice in other countries based on a previous poster. Airlines have to also manage risk too, so they have to reduce the risk of other passengers catching it.

Yes they would still need the 14 day quarantine  because they wouldn't have done that, and they may catch the virus during travel, which seems a common way of catching it.

I haven't seen any criticism about them doing that either, even though I expected there to be.

So last count I heard, 340,000 vehicles arrived at the 10 day US motorcycle event in Sturgis.

At least one infectious person spent over 5 hours in the most popular bar, potentially infecting thousands of bikers.

This visualization shows where people came from. Just imagine it in reverse to see where people will be returning.

Sturgis Here We Come...

Tectonix GEO

"As one of the largest public gatherings since the emergence of COVID-19, the Sturgis motorcycle rally has attracted significant attention around the world. We wanted to see what the migration to Sturgis really looked like when you examine the data, and see if we could offer valuable insights to improve public health, economic considerations, and social policy.

Take a look at Part 1 of our multi-part Sturgis series and let us know what other analysis you'd like to see visualized!"

To be honest, whether it was a surface or hanging droplets isn't the material issue....

it is are we accepting of the 11 day incubation period before symptoms??....

Isn't the incubation period before symptoms become apparent is up to 14 days with an average circa 5 days?

i thought it was 2-5 days from the latest data. don't quote me though.

I think the ~ 5 days average is assumed to be about right.  Maybe you've read that from time you're infected, you could be infectious after a few days, a couple of days before onset of any symptoms.  If true, that might partly explain how hard it is to contain outbreaks - even if the community is aware of the need to be tested and isolate if any symptoms appear.

Given the dubious performance of some of the professionals we should be grateful to have reasonable oversight. After all the professionals didn't bother to test Thelma and Fluese before releasing them, test most of the people working at the border, bother to read the law before lockdown, read the law around considering compassionate release, have any form of testing at the border or tell the truth about what they were doing.

There is desperate need for proper oversight and supervision of the professionals as well as an opposition asking all sorts of difficult questions the government doesn't want to answer. That's how our system of government is designed to work and without it an even bigger disaster will happen.
