Sometimes I see things that really depress me. This is an item about a truly imbecilic couple who wanted to be famous. A young man, a father, persuaded his girlfriend to shoot him in the chest at point-blank range in the hope of breaking through with a YouTube video. For protection, he held an encyclopaedia in front of him.

If the gun had been a .22, or maybe even something a little more powerful, he might have got away with it. He did practice first, and the gun he used, unspecified, did not penetrate even one book. But the gun he used this time was a .50 calibre, for F*** sake, famed for its ability to penetrate all the way through an engine block. The book didn’t even slow the bullet down.

So the young guy is dead and his girlfriend, pregnant with his child, has been charged with manslaughter. He probably deserves his Darwin Award. His idiot girlfriend probably deserves whatever happens to her. But their babies surely don’t deserve to have such people as parents.

I’m not sure why this story depresses me. Not so much the tragic waste, because these people clearly didn’t have all their lights on. Not even the tragicomic aspect of it, because it certainly doesn’t make me laugh. Maybe just the knowledge that there really are people like that in the world. Not bad people, Not evil people. Just people with no sense who want to be famous. I guess what depresses me is they succeeded.

I just could not believe that anyone that stupid could even dress themselves without help, to be honest.

Is this really that much different from someone getting really drunk. Then deciding to go for a drive and killing themselves in a car crash?

tragic for the children involved in one way but if you believe in nurture over nature probably best in the long run, if it is nature over nurture well...

What an idiot.

She used a 50-caliber Desert Eagle, which puts a 44 magnum to shame.

I remember in my youth a friend using a 44 magnum to shoot yellow page; It was a hand-loaded "wildcat" cartridges, and we were afraid the gun would explode.

Anyhow the 44 shot through about 7 cm of paper.

I'd venture a guess that the more powerful Desert Eagle would have no problem shooting through most trees.

I have similar sentiments about the 150 odd people who died in Pakistan looting fuel from the crashed tanker.

Obviously these folk weren't doing so for five minutes of internet fame, and there were some reports that these people are uneducated and unaware of the dangers.  Still, hundreds of litres of highly flammable liquid and allegedly people were smoking, this was never going to end well.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Saw that this morning on the NZH, Like seriously. A 50 cal deagle. Wow... That goes through like an inch of steel or something.. If the book stopped it the dude would have a few shattered ribs and or internal bleeding or damaged organs.

I remember that, Who would have through that smoking a cigarette around fuel vapor would go up, Especially when the whole ground is doused with fuel and is letting off vapor.

Also dumb are the media who keep insisting the guy was recording the shooting as a "prank".

Even if it had worked, it wasn't a prank, it was a stunt.

This is a media that makes the Kardashians famous for, what is it again, who knows, but it makes them famous.

Stupid is as stupid does, unfortunately his genetic line will be continued so natural selection hasn't yet worked

Pretty harsh on the poor girlfriend, to be honest. How the heck is any normal person supposed to tell one gun apart from another - I know I wouldn't have a clue.

The boyfriend had previously shown how to pull off the stunt safely, she participated in good faith and now it's all her fault?

Unfortunately, males don't think straight until at least 25 years upwards.

I'm sure we've all done things very similar, only the item used were different.

It's not really a question of the firearm though.

It's a question of actually being prepared to shoot it at a person other than in self defence.

When I began shooting at a young age, the first rule I was taught was never point a gun at something you are not prepared to kill.

This simple rule serves shooters well.

I agree that there was probably no malice, which is likely why it's a manslaughter charge.
