I need to get a root canal on a lower jaw rear most molar and am trying to find a low cost dentist.

Does anybody here have experience with dentists in Otaki or Levin? I'd love to hear what you paid for a root canal job in those towns.

Thanks,

Tim

Good luck.

You really can't use "low cost" "dentist" and "root canal" in the same sentence.

We've been going to Fred at The Kapiti Dental Center for the last couple of years. I can't recommend him enough for his work with myobraces on our kids.

He may outsource the work you need (he did for my extraction) but he is excellent.

I've no idea if he is low cost or not.

But anyone in Wellington/Kapiti who thinks their kids need braces, I'd suggest you see him. He deals with the underlying issues rather than extracting teeth and putting metal in mouths.

I had two done in Palmerston North. Workmanship was excellent but I wouldn't call it cheap at $1500 a pop.

It actually surprises me that there isn't more disruption in the dental industry like there has been with the pricing in so many others.

My FIL went to Bangkok to have a lot of dental work done. The quote in NZ was $20K and the cost including flights and accommodation was 6K. He rated the experience as the best dental he'd ever experienced.

When he went back to the dentist who'd quoted him 20K (his usual) for a check-up, the dentist remarked it was some of the most professional work he had ever seen. He was pretty sour when my FIL told him who did it.

Not worthwhile in this instance of course, and I am sure there are some horror stories as well.

How long ago was that? I also looked into Thailand but prices have gone up there and there is also local resentment about foreigners tying up services. I'm not sure it is as good a deal as it once was.

It was about 5 years ago now, but I have heard of people going since, but I don't have any details so unsure how big the difference is now.

Thanks for the responses. Thailand isn't an option for one root canal, but if I needed more work done ...

Don't forget that a root canal is only 1/2 the job, add on another $2,000 - $2,500 for the crown.

If it's your very back molar (or even your wisdom tooth?) and your other molars are in good shape, I would seriously just consider extraction.

Here in Christchurch I paid about $500 for the root canal work and then about $1200 for the enamel cap. Cant remember precisely as I am still in shock - had to have two done ( top and bottom molars) and wallet still feeling the pinch

Bit late with this reply, and probably not a lot of help but I had one done in 2008 by Royce Jones in Levin, was around 1k ish then.

I figured we would be 3d printing crowns by now for a fraction of the cost.
