From The Times:

All new cars will be fitted with devices that make sure they automatically keep to the speed limit in a move billed as the biggest overhaul of road safety in more than 50 years.

Within the next three years, models sold in Europe are expected to use technology that detects limits and slows down vehicles travelling too fast.

It will be one of 15 new safety features fitted as standard to cars, HGVs or buses. Other measures include technology that detects when drivers are losing concentration or falling asleep, a system that keeps cars in the centre of lanes and accident black boxes that record vehicle movements.

All cars will also be fitted with automatic emergency braking, which brings vehicles to a stop when pedestrians step into the road or a car ahead suddenly slams on the brakes.

The measures were approved by the European Commission and are expected to be rubberstamped by the European parliament and member states in September. The UK government has already said that vehicle standards will be aligned with those in the EU after Brexit, meaning that the same rules will be expected on British roads.

I see a thriving market in GPS jammers.

And increased road rage against all those people who drive 5-10 mph under the limit - who will now be impossible to overtake safely

I honestly don't know why it hasn't been done already. Japanese cars have had limiters for a long time (at 180kmh). I know why it hasn't, because you'd never sell a car above 2.0L unless people want to tow something. Sadly (for a car enthusiast) the age of petroleum has passed by. A car is simply a tool, and we will all be driving the same thing eventually.

We kept being badgered about speeding, fine, put limiters in every single car at 100kmh. If you want to go to a track, then there can be some sort of device that permits it.

Anywhere else, caught over the limit and the car is confiscated.

Why should a car just be a tool? Why can't they bring a bit of pleasure and stimulation into our lives?
What about bikes? Do you think there should only be one make and model of bike available?

"The speed limiter device, called intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, uses GPS data and sign recognition cameras to detect speed limits where the car is travelling, and then will sound a warning and automatically slow down the vehicle if it is exceeding the limit.

However, drivers will be able to override the device simply by pushing hard on the accelerator, reassuring some motoring groups that have argued that in certain situations – such as when trying to swiftly overtake a vehicle in front – speeding up could be safer."

Maybe they should go one step further and make the car drive at the speed limit unless the driver actively brakes? This could be moderated according to the conditions. Just a step closer to driverless cars

You might, but the police in Europe tend to be rather less soft.

Doubtless jammers will be illegal and the punishment severe. Remember, French speeding fines can be as high as NZ$6500 plus 3 months in jail...!

Because people who treat them like a toy drive fast, break rules, endanger others, and make a big mess when they crash. If you want to drive like that go drive on a track.

I love a good unintended consequence. NZ struggles with an old vehicle fleet people refuse to replace, perhaps Europe is going to find the same thing in another 15 years. Seems like a great incentive to keep older cars on the roads. I expect for a few years it will be a case of "I can buy the 2019 model second hand which will go as fast as I want, or I can buy the 2021 model which goes on strike when it hits the speed limit... which do I choose? hmmmm."

They'll struggle less because they will do what they have done with diesels in the past and with EVs now - spend large sums of money bribing motorists.

Oh I don't think it should just be a tool. It is for me due to the number of KMS I do. But also have a track car. As for bikes, well depends if you mean a motorbike or mountain-bike.

And in theory the limit is 100kmh, so you can have as much fun and stimulation as you like. Up to 100kmh. However my point is, if there was a hard limit, no one would buy a 6.0 V8/10/12 when a 2.0L Turbo is going to get you to the limit in a reasonable time.

The fastest I've ever been in a car was on a racetrack. I hate to think that there are people who might actually do something like that on the road (I was in a road car, not a race car).

There is a wide gulf between "just a tool" and being dangerous and irresponsible. You can get pleasure from driving without being the latter.
Or is this going to be a "why does anybody need a...?" subject that are so topical just now?
