The thing driving the move to EVs is climate change......and the need for action is now well beyond urgent. The usual financial calculations are rendered somewhat pointless in the big picture. Saving a few thousand now and later 'enjoying' a planet that is less habitable......well....the priorities are messed up.

Right. It's incumbent on the Govt to incorporate those future costs into the prices of ICEVs via taxation.

I agree, WHEN the ICE has an EV equivalent at a price that is not too far above the ICE. I would then also be in favour of banning ICE in any size range that had EV choices

The climate isn't waiting around for your former point to happen. If we want to have a chance at actually slowing down the changes we've been causing then we need to start discouraging people from buying those sort of vehicles now.

The early adopters mostly aren't doing it to save money. They're doing it to save planets. Any financial savings are just a nice bonus.

That was certainly my main driver for switching to an EV.

I do wonder about the new Cayennes, mercs and maseratis I see driving around and I would assume these owners could afford an EV but they choose not to? I would think it is becoming more and more dubious to be developing brand new ICE cars much less buying them except for use cases currently not served by an EV equivalent.

There is another point which I've considered recently;

So you switch to an EV and as part of this process you trade in your ICE vehicle towards the cost of the replacement car. All good, however, what then happens to the ICE car? I could be wrong but I suspect most are then on-sold second/third hand etc. Shouldn't there be a consideration to take the ICE vehicle off the road entirely and recycle it, thus reducing the number of petrol vehicles in the fleet? Surely the ideal would be to actually transition NZ's vehicles away from fuel burners as much as possible to cleaner alternatives.

I think in Finland they have [or had] a process to financially incentivise people updating to newer vehicles which resulted in the older ones being scrapped.

It's been a while since I've looked it up, but depending on the age of the vehicle it's better that the old vehicle is used until its no longer usable anymore rather than a new ICE vehicle being imported to replace it. Yes, it will still create emissions but there's quite a lot of emissions involved in getting a replacement vehicle to NZ so if it's being replaced by another imported ICE then it will take a while for those emissions to be zeroed. As more of our imports become EVs rather than ICE vehicles then this point will change.

Depending on a person's usage. For some a 32kWh battery would be plenty and the car would work great for the commute, shopping, dropping kids off, etc.

I'd prefer a car with 400+ km range so it was good for long trips as well as short ones, but some people live in a two car household and one of the cars could easily be a shorter range vehicle.

I agree. But we have to wait till ICE and EV are largely equal on price. The EV does have running costs savings so it can cost more and be worth it. The vast majority of people will buy an EV as they like the look, the cost savings, the look, the cost savings. They will see the green side as a bonus. Not everyone can afford to throw away $ to save the planet. Thats why Govts dont add 10% tax on everything and everyone so that the country can fight for climate change. If GST was supplemented by a 10% Green GST and those funds were used exclusively to actively fight climare change, Im in

Irish construction company Sisk plans to invest €2.8m in electric company cars

Irish construction company John Sisk & Son has announced that it’s going to invest some €2.8 million on more than 100 electric vehicles (EVs) for its company fleet over the next four years.

The company said it was “part of a company-wide drive to enhance energy efficiency”. The move is expected to yield savings of €450,000 annually, much of which will come from a reduction in expenditure on diesel fuel. Thanks to the Government’s electric car incentives, Sisk will also be able to deduct the full cost of the cars from its profits in the year of purchase, rather than claiming against tax over a period of eight years.

On top of the investment in vehicles (which will include company car offerings to all employees who qualify), the company has also said it will invest some €80,000 in installing fast-charging points at its offices and construction sites around the State.

Commenting on the initiative, Ian O’Connor, energy manager at Sisk, said: “This is an exciting initiative that showcases Sisk’s commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction. More than a quarter of our current energy consumption is attributed to our fleet. The switch to electric cars and vans can significantly reduce this so it is an obvious progression for our business.

“As a company, we are investing significantly in energy efficiency to improve the way we do business. EVs are just one of a number of initiatives we are rolling out as part of that commitment. Our ambition is to make energy efficiency part of the business culture in Sisk and across the industry.

“It is our belief that implementing effective energy management will filter through to our subcontractors and supply chain, transforming the construction industry.”

Sisk has estimated that the EV car move will reduce its overall company emissions by 560 tonnes. By its own calculations, Sisk’s total corporate emissions come to 20,240 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
