Personalized plates used to be much more of a thing than they are now. Murray Thom had the original rights to personalized plates - that man is a brilliant entrepreneur with the uncanny knack of being able to turn not much into something quite special - as an example, Carl Doy has the artist credits, but Murray produced & drove his Piano By Candlelight albums to over 3m sales worldwide. I think Murray might have had a close relative who allocated the personalized plates licence, but really you'd be looking long & hard to find a better candidate to establish & grow the market for the first ten years. Back then, there was a genuine investors market for blue plates - 2, 5 & 8 were the record setters - & a lively marketplace for regular personalized plates. It's been 25 years since Murray Thom influenced the PP industry & I don't think I've seen one single noteworthy innovation since. The whole PP thing seems to me to be a very flat, uninspiring product now.

Like @Wheelbarrow01, I also have a few personalized plates - bought in the heat of the moment & largely forgotten about ever since. Because there's a few Holden plates (HSV350, GTS350 etc) which will latch onto the booming prices being paid for Holden cars, I might one day meet someone who wants to own them & turn a long forgotten punt into a pr0fit. Or not.

Personalised Plates, in the NZ context, are another trademe.  The founder saw something happening outside of NZ, but not inside, emulated it and made a killing.

Clever, but not innovative.

What odds that the plate wanted by the OP is currently located in a drawer of someone else responding to this thread...

Batman:

interesting you have unattached plates - currently kiwiplates will only manufacture a plate if you attach it to a vehicle (NZTA register will be updated upon plate production)

I believe you used to have to surrender your personalised plates if you removed them from your vehicle and replaced them with a standard plate, but that is not the case anymore.

When I sold my Ranger, I changed it to regular plates and my personalised ones previously on that vehicle are sitting at home.

I also have other plates that I bought second hand, and they were posted to me by the seller. All I had to do was fill in the form to transfer entitlement

You two are talking about different things.

When buying new you have to attach them to a vehicle within 30 days IIRC.

When buying second hand or replacing with government issued plates you can do what you like with them. I have two sets in my garage not currently on cars and not likely to be so I should sell them.

I'm on the lookout for an already issued personal plate but I doubt I'll ever find it.

Yorkshirekid: ... All I want to do is call the fella and make an offer. I don't care who he is or where he is. Any suggestions how I might be able to resolve this please.

  • Take a long long holiday,
  • drive up & down & across the country,
  • talk to the locals at every bar,
  • hang a "WANTED" poster on every community board you can find

🤷
