quickymart: Does Marsden Point being nearby have no bearing on transportation costs?
None at all. The Marsden Point Oil Refinery closed last year.
quickymart:
Um, I don't think it's that. And if all the prices in the town are more expensive than another town a fair way away, "shopping around" isn't really an option. No one is going to drive 100kms just to save 10c a litre on fuel.
Petrol is quite a bit cheaper in Masterton and Levin than it is in Wellington, so I just fill up on my way home. It's not quite as easy if I've travelling home from the south, but I think the NPD in Picton is still a bit cheaper than Wellington.

I should look up and see what the last 1000 litres have cost me.
$3.13 for 91 in Greymouth today.
It's not so much what the last 1,000 litres have cost you, but what your cost per litre has been since the fuel tax relief was removed on 30 June. I loaded up on 24 June.
Since the 1st of July I've used 511 litres at an average of $2.72
This year 1839 litres at an average of $2.478
Last year 2149 litres at an average of $2.676
I'm not sure how easy it would be to work out if I would be any better off trying to hedge fuel prices. NB this for 91 octane and I only fill up at Gull/Waitomo etc.

It's hard to know where you could have locked in 91 at end of June, as it depends hugely on where you live. I got 95 at $2.51 in Auckland. Say a 20c 91/95 spread, means you would have locked in $2.31 - which is 40c better than what you've been getting. Not to be sneezed at. Obviously, that could have been better (or worse) depending where in the country you locked in with the app.
big difference in Rotorua this morning , the Z station on Fenton St was 3.00 a litre, Pak n Save on the other side of road was 256.7 a litre. The strange thing is that Z supplies Pak n Save with petrol.
Common sense is not as common as you think.
mudguard: Is the app geography dependent? I fill up between Kaitaia and Wellington and everywhere in between.
It gives you the best Z price within a 30 km radius. The best scenario is if you travel widely. Then you can find the lowest in your travels (e.g. Rotorua or wherever) and load up the app there. Then you get to pump it at any Z in Auckland, or wherever you want, regardless of what the price at that station happens to be.
In Christchurch alone, we have eleven separate operators for petrol with nearly 80 different outlets!
This is not a sign of a highly competitive, low profit market.

Similar sort of thing in Whakatane today. I think it was $2.98 at Z and something like $2.75 at Gull just over the road (actual figures may vary as I wasn't actually filling up, but it was a huge difference).

Upper Hutt is just as cheap at the moment. 2.73 at PaknSave with a voucher. A few years ago Masterton usaully had far cheaper fuel than Wellington, but more recently it has been cheaper in Wellington. I think it is all down to competition beucase Masterton has a lot of different fuel brands but at least one of the cheaper brands has now closed. I suspect one reason prices in Wellingotn are higher is becuase on average people may earn more and so people are preapred to pay more.
WTH, I complained when I filled up at $1.61 yesterday on the gold coast. Can I bring some fuel over with me on my trip back to NZ next month for the rental car? 😭 🤣
