You might want to look at a fm transmitter and listen to your CD's through the radio.

eg: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TAABEL4440063/Belkin-Tunecast-Auto-Universal-Hands-Free-AUX-V2

or assuming your car stereo has bluetooth, connect your CD player to a BT transmitter

eg: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TVNSEN508258/Sennheiser-BT-T100-Dual-Bluetooth-Transmitter-for

I've been trying to convince my parents to do something similar.
Only my argument is to pay $100 or so year to the music streamer of choice and never buy another CD again.

FM Transmitters should be a last resort (a car as modern as OP's will have Bluetooth).

Quality of FM transmitters is poor, and the frequencies they operate on are effectively public & very limited, meaning you will run into issues where other nearby people's FM transmitters land on the same frequency as yours. (That is on the assumption that people still use FM transmitters, havn't used one myself for many years.)

I would just use spotify... but you need to have wi-fi on to use spotify and I'm not going to use my personal data on my phone just to play music in the car

Only on the free plan. If you're a paid subscriber, you can download the music to your phone and just connect it from there even without using any data.

Do you mean using your personal phone's 4g or 5g data allocation?

I actually have the opposite problem - I would like to get my digital media to play through my car's CD player...

Get a bunch of mp3 files and burn it to a write once or rewritable CD.   Did that for my wifes car which has no aux or usb.

Until it decides that it wants data to redownload things and will not play anything when offline when you are a long way away from signal.

Do not trust any of the streaming platforms offline playback to work when you need it. They have hostile DRM in their product to make sure it stops working when they want it to stop.

Plus I have no idea what spotify are encoding their stuff with but some tracks on it sound totally aweful like its a transcode from a lousy MP3.

A much more common issue. And the solution largely comes down one of the below depending on what features your car head unit has.

  • USB playback (put files on USB stick)
  • Bluetooth audio (play media with phone or bluetooth capiable mp3 player)
  • Aux in (use 3.5mm cable to play from a device with 3.5 output, or use an external Bluetooth recever to get Bluetooth auto)
  • Rear RCA input (used 3.5mm to 2x RCA cable)
  • CD stacker / changer input (Source a cable that spoof's a CD changer to provide a 3.5mm input: I use this route in my car, stacked with a Bluetooth receiver as my current phone does not have a 3.5mm output)
  • Burn mp3 or similar files to a CD
  • Burn CD format files to a CD.
  • Swap entire head unit to one with modern features. (did this on my prior car, if the air con controls are not integrated with the entertainment unit this is well worth the money)

Just have to get a decent transmitter. Just fit it in between some of the other stations and its good enough. Quality of the branded transmitters can be bad because their low power output to comply with EU and FCC regs is so low, but there are good ones off the common asian source sites. I got this one https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001222877271.html and with a short antenna on it is great for transmitting audio to my old boom boxes in the collection that I have not modded for line input.

Even the cheap "plugs into a ciggy lighter socket and plays off an SD card" thing I got to use in loan cars is fine. Except when the loan car had a USB charger literally glued into the socket, I assume to prevent it from being taken.

Apple Music is good if you have iphone. The plans include music downloads, lossless audio and the Apple Music Classical app.

What year is this MX30?

normally Mazda includes a 3.5mm aux input either in the glovebox or the centre console storage or just on the bottom of the dash in front of the gear shifter

Also, if it’s using the infotainment system, you get a few additional options/settings when the car is off / only on the ACC (old school first click of the key), mode.

it's a 2022 MX30

I've not thought to look in the glovebox for a 3.5mm aux input, but I can look in the manual and see if the car is supposed to have 1 there or somewhere else

I'm 99% sure under the dash in front of the gear stick (Auto) there are just 2 x USB ports, but can have another look

the other option is to transfer YouTube files to MP3 - my brother inlaw gave me a link to a program / software that converts to MP3, so I might try that and see it it works

My last three cars have been Mazdas; a 3 purchased in 2015, a CX5 purchased in 2019 and a CX30 purchased last year. I have never come across an analogue audio input in any of them.
