It may be hard in 2020 to get a number of EV's

It sounds like EVs at both ends of the market, from Kia to Mercedes, have already sold out.

As someone brought to my attention, if you want to purchase an import from Japan, it must have electronic stability control (ESC).

Note each manufacturer calls it something different, but they all have this icon, I believe

But at least Kiwis aren't competing with Australians for the same imports; it's practically impossible to import them there.

Already sold out for 2020, and damn expensive! Funny fight with the voice assistance:
human:...because it's a compromised auto design. Mercedes can do better than that.

car:How can I help you?

human:No, I'm not talking to you! Go away! go'way! Jesus, that's going...

car:I am starting route guidance to "Goway"

human:Goway?! I'm not going to Goway! I said "Go away." Mercedes. Hello. Stop guidance. Hello Mercedes.

car:How may I help you?

human:Stop guidance.

car:Cancelling route guidance.

human:At least that bit worked. When you think of the R&D budget at Mercedes have...

car:Display is off.

human:No, I didn't say turn the display off! ...muttering...oh God. For heavan sakes. ...Points to radio...That would do my head in! It really would! This car is a total compromise, as I've tried to say 5 times now, Mercedes R&D budget...oh no!

human:I've done it again! Cancel!

car:Could you repeat your input, please?

human:...very deliberatelly...Cancel. The company that makes this car,

Mercedes EQC - Teacher Says, Can Do Better!

Electric Vehicle Man

Sometimes expectations are high, as they should be with the £65k+ Mercedes EQC full electric vehicle. So have they done a proper ground up EV, or is it an ICE parts bin special?

It shouldn't really be a problem for EVs , as according to this all leafs had ESC in Japan since 2010 ( when they were launched)

https://www.marklines.com/en/report/rep947_201102

and Japan required all new cars to have ESC from 2014, and all new models since 2011

Japan has now mandated fitment of ESC for light passenger vehicles. ESC must be fitted to all new models introduced from October 2012 and all light passenger vehicles produced from October 2014

Kind of excited to read that Toyota have announced a RAV4 PHEV for MY2021. Similar performance (ev range etc) to the Outlander PHEV. The only fly in the ointment is an Australian report that it isn’t coming to their shores. I’m hoping that won’t apply to NZ (they don’t get the Prius Prime either) as I came very close to buying a RAV4 hybrid earlier this year. Would allow me to save the extra cash to pay for the bigger battery, and may even qualify for a feebate :-)

Australia is so backward. It's really sad.

Sure! It would come down to price and convenience.

If you could carry a spare for when the 1500 miles runs out and they were about the size of a couple of shoe boxes and cost $100....it might work.

I think the ESC rule is currently for cars newer than 20 years old and over 2,000cc.

Austin’s chief executive, Danny Corcoran, use-once batteries in vehicles is a different philosophy than the traditional rechargeable batteries.

    From https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/12/naval-veteran-aluminum-air-metalectrique/

...Aluminum-air batteries had been around for a while. But the problem with a battery which generated electricity by “eating” aluminum was that it was simply not efficient. The electrolyte used just didn’t work well.

This was important. An electrolyte is a chemical medium inside a battery that allows the flow of electrical charge between the cathode and anode. When a device is connected to a battery — a light bulb or an electric circuit — chemical reactions occur on the electrodes that create a flow of electrical energy to the device.

When an aluminum-air battery starts to run, a chemical reaction produces a “gel” by-product which can gradually block the airways into the cell. It seemed like an intractable problem for researchers to deal with.

But after a lot of experimentation, in 2001, Jackson developed what he believed to be a revolutionary kind of electrolyte for aluminum-air batteries which had the potential to remove the barriers to commercialization.

“Everything was steady, the hydrogen and gel were almost gone but the power was a lot better.”

His specially developed electrolyte did not produce the hated gel that would destroy the efficiency of an aluminum-air battery. For Jackson, it seemed like a game-changer: “All I needed to do was to tell the government. ‘Simple’, I thought.”

The breakthrough — if proven — had huge potential. The energy density of his battery was about eight times that of a lithium-ion battery

"Volkswagen says the car will be completely carbon-neutral at the point of delivery ...  the car will release no carbon dioxide excess during the manufacturing process"

"... also claims their new electric car can travel up to 342 miles based on WLTP estimates ..."

"Sales have hit the roof since the car was first revealed in May, with a massive 10,000 pre-orders placed within the first 24 hours.
A further 30,000 pre-orders were taken up until September where the car made its world debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show"

2020 is definitely the year for EV's.

However it looks like long waits worldwide on many models, with many manufacturers struggling with demand.

Orders could take up to a year to fill.

This includes models at all levels of performance

  • from Kia's and Hyundai’s
  • to Mercedes and Porsche Taycan
  • to Rimac C Two and Pininfarina Battista
