I don't know what it's like to drive a big campervan like that but I have driven a truck before. The steering wheel doesn't control the vehicle. You turn the steering wheel with all your might (it's big!) and then count to 5 (fast count) then the vehicle does something that you either wanted or didn't expect. And it bounces around at every indulation. And the brakes are spongy. And you get an education on centrifugal force in in any corner.

Incompetent to drive a campervan in that narrow road? Yeah I think all of us would fall into that category. Bad to hog the whole road? I think so, but I wasn't in that campervan's driver seat lol

I disagree. I regularly see campervans driving on more difficult roads than that without seeing them straddle the centreline or drive anything like like the driver in that video.

I've never has an issue driving large vans.

Maybe not all of us... wink

One of many I spent 14hrs a day in (on many winding narrow roads too)

Edit: only took this photo because I'd just got new curtains on the trailer. :D

Are you talking about an old or badly maintained vehicle?  We had a Bedford like that when I was growing up.

Modern trucks, even large rigid bodied ones are easy to drive. 23 seater buses ditto.

Modern trucks in the campervan size range are great to drive.  Responsive steering and brakes, normally automatic as well, generous wing mirrors.  As idiot proof as they can be.

It's just that people who are inexperienced with large vehicles shouldn't drive them in conditions which are both unfamiliar and challenging to them.

I have no issue with their speed in the video, just their position on the road.  As I said above use of the left wing mirror would have addressed that.

Is it legal to use foreign numberplates in NZ? I just saw someone in a campervan with Dutch plates (on the wrong side of the road...)

No, it's not illegal so long as the vehicle is only in the country temporarily and has been registered with NZTA. Driving on the wrong side of the road is of course totally illegal..

Thanks. It's the first time I've ever seen foreign plates on a vehicle here!

I've seen a black Chevy Tahoe around Johnsonville, with US plates. I suspect it belongs to someone in the US Embassy.

That's a clever way to draw attention to yourself.

That campervan is not going to be very suited to drive around in NZ. They drive on the right side of the road in the Netherlands. So its going to be a lot harder for the driver to figure out how to position the van on the road driving on "the wrong side". I guess one way to fix that is to drive like you were in the Netherlands.. Might work for a short time..

I just came back from a 5100km road trip across the country. Can't praise my dashcam enough for recording several scary moments.

This was the one that stood out:

Driving through the Lewis Pass, north bound. Road was quite busy and making our way towards Picton. Came up to a bend and yaiks.. a car way across the centre line.
Driver did not stop and took off at high speed. I pulled over at the nearest opportunity, hooked up the dashcam to my laptop, found the rego and called 111.Police put out a broadcast for the vehicle of the description (failing to stop after an accident) and a very friendly officer stopped the culprit about 1 hour later somewhere near Hanmer and texted me.

Thanks to the footage this perp received an infringement for crossing the centre line. He knocked our mirror and it has minor damage but I am pursuing through insurance nevertheless. His excuse was he just bought a new vehicle with the steering wheel on the left and he was still getting used to driving it on NZ roads. He gave me the fright of my life, if he was a foot closer to the car he would have scraped up the entire side of our vehicle, or worse, caused a head-on collision.

Dashcam also captured a Post Haste driver doing 140km/h between Blenheim and Picton and another perp in a SUV + trailer that accelerated as I was attempting to overtake him towards Greymouth.

That's probably the same person that owned the gold one I used to see around 4-8 years ago. He is a kiwi and was on Fair Go a while back.
