Thanks. It's the first time I've ever seen foreign plates on a vehicle here!

 

A friend of mine drove his Land Rover from London to NZ and kept the UK plates on it for 12 months before registering it in NZ. Still has the GB sticker on.

Last year in Laos, I came across a Ford Transit in some two-chicken village miles from anywhere that had UK plates on so people do make very long international journeys. I would imagine NZ sees few of them simply due to the cost of getting here but I suppose you go through OZ.

No, it's not illegal so long as the vehicle is only in the country temporarily and has been registered with NZTA. Driving on the wrong side of the road is of course totally illegal..

 

 

That campervan is not going to be very suited to drive around in NZ. They drive on the right side of the road in the Netherlands. So its going to be a lot harder for the driver to figure out how to position the van on the road driving on "the wrong side". I guess one way to fix that is to drive like you were in the Netherlands.. Might work for a short time..

 

No different than the thousands of UK camper vans driven round Europe every year and vice versa, surely? Most Europeans are 'bi-lingual' drivers if they travel a lot - especially lorry drivers as lorries cross back and forth 24/7. UK drivers of course are, I think, the only left hand side drivers in Europe, so tend to be fairly adept if they holiday or work on the continent at switching sides etc.

The hardest thing to get used to us going round roundabouts the wrong way!

Yeah, the number of dicks I've seen running red lights lately. I reckon this country would have no govt debt if they fined all these people for this behaviour.

Nah - the worst offenders just have them converted to Community Service - which they don't do either!

Every trip I make here in Christchurch longer than 15 minutes, I average seeing 3 red light runners.

Oh yeah, I meant in a perfect world where these people paid their fines.

1st offence: $50

2nd offence: $1000 or 7 days in prison

3rd offence: : car sold, all money to the state, 7 days in prison, $5000 fine if it wasn't your car

4th offence: Lifetime driving ban, 1 year in prison no parole

I know the police (and penalties) are much harsher in Australia than here, and I was pleasantly surprised by the civilised driving I observed whilst in Sydney last week.

Those are crazy options, the cost to NZ would be huge and not just for the Prison service.
