I'll bet VW aren't on their own here. The others are yet to be caught.

On the positive side these engines are probably much cleaner than many jap import diesels you see leaving a permanent smoke screen in their wake.

Imagine if BMW were caught doing the same!

Jap cars never claim such ludicrous carbon dioxides like a VW, so no cheating as such. The cars that claim low carbon dioxides are those German car makers

On the positive side these engines are probably much cleaner than many jap import diesels you see leaving a permanent smoke screen in their wake.

That may not be the case in terms of NOx, and it may not be the case in terms of the invisible nano particulates being emitted by VW/Audi petrol engine cars.

I can see why people would be hopping mad if they bought one for the environmental halo. Should have got a Prius or an Outlander PHEV ; ).

Is there any chance they get away with this under German law and kimd of did not adjust for the provision for defeat devices under American law? It just seems so weird and I hope the full story comes out eventually.

Every chance they've been getting away with it under German law, and the authorities have done nothing, despite it being put under their noses.
repost of link on test of supposed Euro 6 compliant VW Golf 1.4 TSI test fail when properly tested.
These are sold in NZ.

Do you seriously think the Prius and and PHEV are environmentally friendly, with environmental cost of the batteries? I'm guessing not with your wink ; ).

VAG are in really very deep crap now. They've admitted that the "issue" affects 11 million cars globally with that engine.

According to German papers online, they've "set aside" 6.5 billion Euro. My guess is that won't come close to covering the cost they'll be facing in the US alone.
Radio NZ interviewed a US law firm commencing class action. They commented that they'd never seen customers so furious.

Probably not. There have been scandals of sorts by many major car manufacturers. Usually a big fine and that's it. Remember VW have pretty clever lawyers too.

Clever software guys too - but not quite clever enough

Not sure I agree how well they'll weather this at all. Now the US is one thing - but VAG are not a major player in the US market, a few billion in fines etc and some long-term plan to restore customer confidence, and yeah - it might not have been a lethal hit.
Now it's serious - German economists are talking about it being a major hit to their economy, big job losses etc.
They also have big investment and sales in China - which have been lagging. The Chinese tend to be merciless when it comes to that kind of thing. They cop plenty of crap from the west about QC issues, but take note that when VAG were having some "issues" with their DSG transmissions and didn't get it sorted quickly enough, the Chinese got up and flayed them - ordering them to recall before any other market did anything at all. As for fraud - if VW sold those cars there, they'll lock a few VW execs up and throw away the key.
I don't think the Japanese will be too sympathetic, the Euro makers made big ground when Toyota had their "unintended acceleration issue" - which turned into a huge song and dance about almost nothing - yet still cost Toyota billions (excluding lost sales).

The affected cars are probably here too - despite what VW NZ CEO said to the media today. TDI 2 litre Skodas, VW and Audi probably have the engine with "emissions defeat".

Then there's what I posted about the petrol engines - if that is as it appears it might be, I doubt VW could ever recover.
