I have only had sidewall issues on tires, which apparantly renders them irreperable and the cans of stuff are no good for.

Funnily enough the people I know that always have flats are those that get the cheapest tires possible, and run them down to the point where they fail a wof for no tread on a tire that is horribly gone hard and well past its useful life. And they still manage to get them repaired when any decent place should tell them its had it.

My car came with two cans of goo instead of a spare. Not sure why two... either they're not reliable, or you may get two punctures? Reading the manual, it says (a) that a goo-filled tyre is only good for 70-80kph, and (b) that you have to replace the tyre. So a puncture turns from a few dollar repair to a couple-of-hundred-dollar tyre replacement. I'd prefer a space-saver.

I've had 2 punctures in the last 6 months in my Nissan Leaf. First was on a road trip at 8pm Friday night in rural NZ. Dark and cold night. Shredded the tire wall so can of goo was useless.

Since then i brought a second hand space saver for 80 dollars. Used that space saver in last week's punctures which happened while out shopping in town.
In that case the space saver was in the garage so went home and picked it up and used it for 2 days while fixing the tire.

I plan to carry the space saver around when out of town and leave it at home for most of time as I'm never far from my house.

But after only having a can of goo when I needed a tire I will never again rely on goo!

premiumtouring: To add fuel to this tyre fire, the BMW i3 has different sized tyres (width) on the back and front BUT the worst part is the rims are not interchangeable left to right as all four wheels are unique.

This isn't an altogether unique situation. Some Jappa's have different offsets front and rear (MR2 & Altezza Gita spring to mind) and once you put directional tires on them, they're not interchangeable left to right, however the space saver they come with is designed to fit any position. I guess the resulting compromise in performance is one reason space savers have a reduced speed limit.

My Leaf has no spare, but I carry a space saver around in the boot. The glue and pump are of limited use. Same stud pattern as all the other Nissan 5 studs, so easy find and cheap to buy. Weight saving seems like a bit of a hollow excuse to me - they're a heavy hatch anyway at 1450kg empty and 1800 kg max.

I average a puncture every 24 months, so it would too risky not to have a spare.

That's only 350kg of load weight, 4pax @80kg = 320kg

- So I'm guessing the spare got biffed to allow you to take all the lads down to the Bottle shop and actually bring home something more than a single can between you :)

I wonder if a space saver is suitable for a 2 tonne unladen van (+ 8 pax and their stuff, gross just under 3 tonne)?
