NonprayingMantis: I pay for fuel by the litre which I think is totally unfair. Fuel should be unlimited for a set fee (say, $30 per month).
Having to pay per litre limits my freedom to use my car the way it was intended.

Nice!!

Maybe free driving offpeak?  :-)

well, maybe unlimited free driving is asking a bit much.  How about free driving as long as I only drive around my own neighbourhood?
:P

Glad to see some realism here, after all, the motorways do cost a lot to maintain, while, as we all know, local roads are actually free and require no maintenance.

OK, so its free national traffic, or as Neil suggests, local traffic. No "traffic shaping"???

well the government should be forced to build roads to accomodate maximum speed traffic at all times.
If I'm paying tax on my petrol and car registration for roads, then for the council to purposely lay roads they know are not wide enough to accomodate all traffic at any time is simply price gouging, and even though I know nothing about road planning I am going to claim price gouging.

When it slows to a crawl at peak times I am not getting value for money.

Luckily the UltraFastRoad plan from the government is going to give me a gold plated driveway for my house, so that should sort out the motorway congestion.....shouldn't it?

Unfortunately the people delivering the roading service, will only give you free driving on roads to other people that use the same provider and in order maximise (their) efficiently they have built their own roads...which run parallel to everyone elses roads.

Hopefully they give me a decent discount on my new car as I will be damned if I am signing up to a 24 month contract without one. Maybe I also need to stash extra cars all over the place to get the best deals for the best roads at any given place/time.

insane: 2006 VW Golf 2.0 TDi

6.0L/100km around town
5.2L/100km open road

Love the torque a turbo diesel provides, and the economy.

+1

2011 VW Golf 2.0 TDi

6.5L/100km short trips over hilly roads to nearest town
5.0L/100km open road
4.7L/100km Nana driving on flat Waikato country roads

Best mileage from 55 Litre tank: 1020km
Worst mileage from 55 Litre tank: 850km

Love the feeling of surfing the wave of torque a turbo diesel provides, and the brilliant fuel economy.

2006 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2.2 CRDi
8.4 L/100km overall - mostly open road but includes towing the trailer and boat (not at the same time!)
For the first two years it was 8.2, the next couple of years it crept to 8.3, now 8.4. Serviced on a regular basis and similar driving/towing.
Have previously had a 2.7 Surf and a 3.0 Wizard and the Santa Fe leaves them both for dead in every way!

I was going to get the GTI, but after driving the TDi (with 225/45/r17 tires and sport suspension) , there was no point. A turbo diesel makes the most sense for our roads here and is surprising fun to drive,

Just have to get past all the jokes about being able to attach the plough to the tow bar when you get home, and running on the decomposed dinosaurs.
