Why the focus on straight line acceleration? Sure it's an important metric but there are other things. Cornering and handling are probably more important.

You need to drive one over the desert road (or similarly technical road), and then report back πŸ˜‰

Consumer reports are focusing on 0-60 and outright lying about it, even their poor stats for cars not sold for years are wrong.

As for handling, the 3 is a beast.  Its probably one of the fastest real world point to point cars you can buy.

I'm not sure they're lying, probably more like incompetence. I've seen similar conflicting/incorrect information for other motor cars.

I've been reading a few road test reviews of the Model 3 and while all of them are super impressed with the straight line acceleration many of them don't rate the handling as highly and regularly suggest there are better handling cars which are better point to point drives.

I'm not going to say its the best handling car, its certainly not, others (new m3 etc) have more sophisticated suspensions, but then you have $80k change to work on that, but the combination of handling and availability of power which fossil cars cant match plus the instant traction control etc.

Yep, I'd quite like that, though I wouldn't call the Desert Road all that technical unless you're talking about the northern end just south of Rangipo.

How does the Model 3 compare with the likes of the Subaru WRX for handling?

(Edit to change to Model 3.)

I forgot to add, I don't have a WRX and haven't driven one, I was just using it as a bench mark as they are well known as a good handling sedan. A reviewer of a make/model of car pretty much the same as what I have suggested it would handily see off a WRX. I doubt I'll ever exceed it's limits on a public road.

I have no doubt the Model 3 would blitz my car in a drag race but overall I may not be as impressed as you might think. From what I can tell the torque vectoring AWD system in my car is superior to the Tesla AWD system.

If you are actually curious about what a Model 3 is like to drive, you can schedule a test drive at the store in Auckland.

I found out last night you can actually schedule test drives in Wellington now also. So taking my partner on one so she can experience a Tesla, but I’m extremely close to ordering likely the long range model (seriously, the premium sound damn it).

@michaelmurfy: Are you able to share how one arranges this? Cheers.

My Mercedes has the quite amazing Airmatic suspension.

Is there a technical reason why a car like a Tesla couldn't incorporate some sort of similar system?

I decided to both treat myself and also provide more time for a purchasing decision and rented a Model 3 from Go Rentals for 24 hours. It cost $215 + $50 insurance (to bring down the excess from $5K to $1500).

I took the car from Wellington to Martinborough and back and some city driving.  Got to try the awesome acceleration on some back highway roads in Martinborough ( :-)).

After the drive and some Wellington city driving I ended up with 18% battery so charged it at the Johnsonville Supercharging station. Left the car on the charger for about 20 minutes I think (we dashed into the Countdown) and when we came back it was 75% full and had about 35 minutes to go. We didn't bother to complete it since Go Rental said we only had to return the car with at least 20% charge on it.

Not sure how much the charge cost - looked like about $18 which would be charged to Go Rental's account I guess and charged back to me. That is certainly a game changer since to fill my regular car with 60 litres of 95 is about $140 ish!

It was a fun drive but after it I am sure I would not get one. I think you can get better value cars for the money you spend and incredible acceleration only goes so far! Plus (and you could get use to it) I found having to delve into the menus for simple things like changing the AC, opening the glove box etc. just a bit OTT for me. But it was a fun drive for 24 hours.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
