arnies:I'm looking at the Y (order is in, still deciding to go through with it) but curious if the full-send into the future with no buttons etc will piss me off. Skoda (and others) offer an easier transition to the EV world.

The Y has amazing space inside the cabin and boot though which is appealing.

TBH, most of the time I prefer the minimalist controls of the Tesla, and it didn’t take long to for it to feel ‘normal’. During the weekend I drove my wife’s car (a Leaf) for the first time in many weeks, and it was just weird having to turn the car on/off, release/set the parking brake etc. Did not enjoy it at all! Tesla have also added changes that have helped, eg the latest key firmware release introduced a shortcut feature where a button on the steering wheel can be used to do one of a range of actions (I’ve got it set to defrost the windscreen).

Can totally back up the spaciousness of the Y - we were worried about a lack of space travelling without a roof box (something we’d always use when on holiday with our previous car) but I’ve never found it lacking the ability to take all our stuff. (Well, I’ve occasionally found I’ve run out of space to fit our luggage and then realised I’d forgotten to use the under-floor storage in the rear!) I sat in the back in the weekend and it reminded me how much space there is for rear passengers; I think it’s similarly roomy (if not more leg room?) in the Enyaq though.

You get used to it, but I'd be lying if I said it was my favourite feature of my car. Some things should just have buttons, end of.

@SaltyNZ - I’m interested to know which controls you feel need to be button based; I could well be over-estimating my own satisfaction with the Tesla way, given it’s generally the only car I drive.

The one that annoys me most regularly is the wipers. Given how legendarily useless the auto mode is, I'm constantly having to manually switch between off and 1. I wouldn't mind so much if that was just a twist of the column like any other vehicle, but in the Tesla it involves pressing the button on the end of the stalk and then taking my eyes off the road to tap the screen down in the corner where it's partially hidden by the steering wheel.

I'd also prefer the glovebox to have a button rather than a screen tap but that one I can deal with.

Is the wiper speed not one of the things you can set to be controlled by the long press function on the left scroll wheel? If it’s not, it should be. (Sorry I’m away from my car so can’t check).

I use that function for the hvac fan speed.

This conversation is probably best had in one of the Tesla threads.

The wipers can now be controlled by pressing the button on the stalk and then pushing the left scroll wheel left or right.

I'm nearly four years into owning a Model 3. The centre screen has never been an issue for my partner or I. Most of the commonly controlled features are done so by buttons on either the steering wheel or stalks. It's very rare that I actually need to touch the screen while I'm driving.

I dont know that there is really a 'proper' forum to ask this - but how does Tesla handle trade-ins?

Anyone had experience with that?

On the day of delivery you give them the keys. Some chap takes a real quick look (mainly at the odometer), makes sure it's the right model and what not, and then it's all done.

In other words, if it looks like a car, of the right make and model, and the odometer is about right, then it's all good to go.

So you filled out the form on their website, send the details off and get a valuation and then the above process you described?

That's right. They don't really care about minor scuff marks or small cosmetic issues. I watched the guy take about 30 seconds to view the car before driving it to their storage area.

The only issue with Tesla Trade ins is they really low-ball offer you. Offered me 15k for a car I could probably sell for 25k.

Just for a laugh I thought I'd see how much they'd offer for my 2001 Mondeo with 250k km on the clock.

Looks like BYD is confirming the seal at fieldays tomorrow morning. They've put up a photo saying they are doing something and the photo of a badge saying BYD SE.

Not as optimistic on a good price on this one after the dolphin not coming in any cheaper than the kra and mg here.

My feeling is that the BYD pricing is very disappointing.

I was seriously considering an Atto 3 but with them sliding the price upwards after launch, I started thinking more seriously at Tesla as an option.

If I have to pay 'a lot' for an EV with over 400km range, should I throw more in for a more 'proven' brand name?

I knew we would never get mainland China prices here, but they seem to have gone for the maximum they think the market will stand.

The Dolphin also seems overpriced compared to what I have seen them selling for overseas. How much of that is CGA/Freight/Compliance, I dont know, or maybe the dealers/distributors are clipping too much of the ticket along the way.

I see reports that Chinese EV sales have tanked in Europe after starting off with a hiss and a roar.

I think there is maybe an impression that they havent 'proved' themselves yet and are priced the same as 'established' brands that people already know.

(Even if the 'established' brand products are probably built (at least partly) in China)

BYD and MG haven't earned themselves this premium pricing and are getting ahead of themselves.

Tesla have earned it, the hard way over a decade.
