But should the above articles frighten off people from buying a Tesla?

What would happen to deposits paid by Tesla buyers if the company went into liquidation?

Even if Tesla did go under, how serious would this be to Tesla owners?

Isn't it likely that another major car company would takeover Tesla if the company went into liquidation? In other words, what's the point in continually promoting all these negative articles about Tesla's precarious financial position?

Sorry I didn't realise that we were only allowed to say positive things about Tesla.

Should their financial situation put you off buying one? Maybe, it depends on your risk appetite. Should someone purchasing a very expensive car be informed? Definitely.

I think it is worthwhile to know about Tesla's financial position, but when you say "it depends on your risk appetite", do you think there is a real possibility that some Tesla buyers may never receive the Teslas they've ordered and lose their deposits? Or is this possibility so remote that it's not even worth considering?

There is a real possibility of them running out of cash. At that point anything could happen, including abandoning pre-orders or making firmware upgrades a paid service.

Is it likely? Probably not but until they show they are able to make a profit AND much more importantly generate free cashflow I'd be cautious and monitor them carefully before putting my money into them. If they have another quarter like Q1 I'd start to become very cautious.

Nice review... My (perhaps negative) takeaways

That ludicrous centre screen! (Ergh!)

Car was delivered with a certain featureset but he mentions a rumour that Tesla might disable some of the features later (!!!)

All the features seem to be nickel and diming the customer (standard navigation one level, but if you pay more, you get the satellite imagery as well)

Some speakers are installed but disabled. (two sets of front speaks exist but not active!)

I get why they are doing these things, but it reminds me a lot of a software company where they control your use of the product. How long until autopilot is a subscription feature?

No XM (for US), no carplay, no AM, no android auto, no way to access iphone media library (apart from Bluetooth) in the base model.

I love the look of all the cool features, but having virtually everything as an $option$ is a bit annoying.

Fit and finish wasn't great (not for a car of this price) and paint concerns.

Cheers - N

Yes, I'd prefer a car company, and where the features remain once I pay up.

There is the build quality issue as well. Rather have a Kona Elite

Watching the drive review now - I do like the reviewer - clearly an enthusiast of the car but seems to be very even handed with his comments.

It does point out though that there are some inescapable things in a heavy electric car from a young company.

- Requires 47PSI in the tyres to hit their economy/range figures but that badly compromises ride quality

- Braking is not on par with average petrol cars in the segment and greatly behind good cars in the segment. (likely impacted by the high efficiency tyre setup)

- Pleasantly surprised about the handling being apparently decent, but Americans seem to have a different calibration for that than many others.

- Little things like wind noise and whistles at certain speeds from several places on the car. That's a perfect example of why Tesla isn't yet a mature car company.

- Ugly wheel covers in order to meet efficiency target - but that's ok, it's an easily changed option but you'll lose some range.

- Related to above - can't put performance tyres on it without affecting range. Shame because that's the best safety upgrade for nearly any car.

- Reviewer got substantially less range than the advertised value - perhaps surprising considering they were generally pretty realistic I thought. (Still good compared to most other EVs)

Actually, having watched the whole thing I have to say he's an excellent reviewer.

I still wouldn't consider a Model 3 personally when a Brand new 330i is effectively the same price.

Cheers - N

The only reason I'm looking at the Tesla is the 0-100 in 3s ... I'd imagine the local drag strip will be filled with rich kids in their Teslas ...

The car in the video was bought as a Standard Range model, which isn't available in NZ and is only available in the US as an "off book purchase".  It's a software downgrade of the Standard Range Plus and you pay less for the downgraded version.  This is to get it to the US$35k price.  The reason it was delivered without the software limits already in place is because the initial plan was that the Standard Range would be a seperate car from the Standard Range Plus.  It would also have a lower priced interior with cloth seats, manually adjusted seats and steering wheel and a different center console design. I imagine for reasons of keeping the manufacturing cost down, they decided instead to scrap that idea and just software limit the Plus to be a non-Plus version however this software limit hadn't been designed by the time deliveries were to begin so people who ordered were advised that they could take the Standard Range Plus and agree that the software limit would come into place OR if they decide they like the extras the Plus brings they could pay the difference and avoid the software limit.

With that out of the way, paying for extras is extremely normal in the auto world.  Nearly every car out there has packages and options that you can pay extra for and some charge you a yearly subscription for these (such as BMW with CarPlay).  This isn't something new that Tesla is doing.

Get comprehensive insurance package that includes a hire car - what's another $100/year when you're forking out $70-100k for one of these...

I legitimately think the smaller wheels look better than the wheels included on the performance pack.

I will die on this hill if need be.
