I like toys.

In any case, let's say if a rich uncle gave me to use a Tesla Model S as a toy, and let's say my house is at the racetrack (ie no charge wasted travelling to the racetrack), how many laps would I be able to do (say the track was 3 miles long).

This crowd took one out to a track and blew through milage at about 3 times the quoted range, i.e 33 track miles knocked 90 miles off the range,

So with a 250 mile range you would probably get 80 odd laps of a 3 mile course,

Cool.

Can someone explain to me why my rechargeables are good for 1000 charges whereas these EVs can last years and years and not drop in capacity (ie max range)?

Have you got lithium rechargable batteries?

I like toys too.  If someone gave me a Tesla S I'd be over the moon.

But it would be quite hopeless for towing the boat (2 tonnes) ... so I would still need the Pajero or some other workhorse.

They were doing an average of 180 Kmh on the track. You would not get anywhere near the manufacturers stated fuel consumption on most any vehicle at that speed.

Yeah but if my rich Nigerian uncle gifted me a car that costs an Auckland house deposit and goes 200kph why would I use it to go 45?

Hmm I believe that is pretty good.

IIRC race fuel consumption of say a Ferrari would be about 3 mpg.

With a 25 gallon tank ... less than 10 laps!

Why should EVs have buss lane access? Seems it would be better to leave them stuck in traffic where they produce no emissions. Perhaps a tax break would be better if we were trying to save the environment, but choosing them for bus lane access is about as sensible right now as choosing cars that are pink or have some other obscure feature.

MikeAqua:

It's a toy in the sense it won't do the mid range work of a cargo van or ute.

Utes and vans are converging on 1 Tonne cargo or 2 - 3 Tonne tow.

That little van carries 0.7 T cargo, it wouldn't tow the skin off a rice pudding and it's somewhat range limited.

It no doubt has its niche applications like delivering small, light items short distances, particularly in urban settings when there is reasonable proportion of stationary time.

But it isn't a substitute for the vast majority of the light commercial fleet.

gzt: These are not toys. There are a range of applications where these are perfect.

Ummm, the e-nv200 is Small van, and has a payload 770kg, and 4.2 m^3 of load space. Of course this won't compete with a iMax/Hiace/Transit. (but load space actually compares pretty well to the likes of a ute with a canopy on (if your cargo needs to stay dry).

The Florist near me has one of the petrol variant's. I have seen quite a lot of electricians with the petrol one too. If the payload/load space meets your needs, it would be much cheaper, and easier to fit in car-parks than say a transit.

Test & Tag people often use the Holden Combo which is a similar size.

These are not toys, it's simply a matter of matching vehicle to application. I can't imagine the florists van towing a 2 tonne trailer. (even the much larger, popular Hiace is only rated at 1.5 tonne)
