Batman: Not build quality, but I'll just call it alternative design

For the second time, my reference to build quality was not re this issue, its a comment that we have all heard for a long time with Tesla. And as I stated, that is another reason to avoid them

There's a lot less of that now vs this time last year when production was first starting to ramp up. Having said that, "build quality" issues are fairly straight forward to have fixed up and Tesla has been doing this.  Should it happen?  No, but in the grand scheme of owning the car it's a fairly minor thing that you deal with, have fixed and move on.  Should you reject a brand and the superior EV technology you get with it for something that is rather minor?  That's up to you I guess, I personally prefer to get best value for my money.

If there is a build quality issue, that's shoddy for a premium vehicle. How superior are Tesla's EV engines and battery to others? EV's are not new. Batteries are not new. Whats the featureset you get in an 80k Tesla? And I mean the features that are turned on. Like Apple, there is a lot of koolaid going on, bit at least Apple match the premium build quality of the hardware and software.

Value for money? You can argue that Apple isnt value for money. Will Tesla be value for money compared to other car manufacturer based EV's? Time will tell

I find it extremely disturbing @nate is not in this thread, with a photo of a new Tesla order... Instead he's been test driving new Skoda cars around...

Sandy Munro who is well known for tearing cars down and examining how they're made has identified and shown how Tesla's motors and battery tech is superior to what its competitors are doing.  It will be a few years before the other manufacturers catch up to that and by then Tesla will have improved on their current designs and the rest will be playing catch up again.  It's the engineering that I'm referring to when getting value for money and the main reason why I'm buying a Tesla over the other EV options.  As an example, the all new Audi Etron has a similar sized battery to the Model X, is a much newer design (Model X is from 2015) and yet it's much heavier and doesn't get as much range as the Tesla.  The Model X and S are about to get a refresh so it'll be interesting to see how much catch up Audi and co need to do.

The second value for money aspect to me is that Tesla constantly release updates for the cars, you're not set in stone with what you got like every other manufacture. Where their hardware allows, older Model S and X cars that were bought years ago are getting over the air updates that give them the same new features that new cars are getting.  UI refreshes, Sentry Mode, Dog Mode, Navigate on Autopilot, countless other autopilot improvements, charging speed increases, etc. The Model 3 even got an update recently that further improved its performance and increased its range.  "Legacy" manufacturers would want you to buy a whole new car to get this.

Am abit annoyed that we don't have the flexibility of ordering that the USA has (I do understand the reasoning behind it).

Might hold off for now and see if that changes in the near future. In the meantime, my Skoda is coming out of warranty and I'm so original that I'm just getting the same again, but newer!

To be fair, they accomplished this by relaxing software limitations that previously artificially restricted performance and usable battery capacity of the car you bought, right?

Tesla have in the past temporarily relaxed software limits on range for cars in natural disaster areas as well which:

a) is a nice soundbite

b) illustrates that you're licensing the car and driving experience as much as buying it.

Now, let's unspin your post ;)

In the case of the Model 3, they were cautious on the limits initially.  After a year of monitoring cars in the wild they determined that they could relax some of those limits to give more range and more performance.

In the case of temporarily reducing the software limits during natural disasters, this applies to cars that were purchased at a cheaper cost that have software limits to artificially reduce the battery size.  Are you suggesting that Tesla shouldn't make cheaper SKUs?

I figured you were spinning so hard the other direction it was fair play :-)

I am suggesting that it feels like a software or phone/PC lineup rather than cars.

Tesla has opened their order page for the Tesla Model 3 for New Zealand, with deliveries expected to start in August.

With the options available it starts at $74,960 (incl. ORC) for the rear wheel drive standard range, and maxes out at $113,360 for the Performance model four wheel drive with full self driving autopilot.

I'll be able to order when our house sells.....so soon, fingers crossed. Probably the Standard Range Plus. That's heaps for driving around NZ and more than double the range of my current EV (30kWh LEAF). I've driven EVs like this before.....and you forget it's an EV as far as range goes. I always filled my petrol tank at half anyway and usually stop for a rest at the same time.......and this will be no different. The reviews for the Model 3 have been uniformly awesome.

I'm curious what you think I spun :)

Tesla IS a tech company that makes cars, that's kind of their whole thing.  So yeah, if you're the sort of person that isn't a fan of dealing with updates and a touchscreen orientated interface you're probably not going to like a Tesla.

kingdragonfly: 18 minute video A Tesla model 3 has a minor fender bender in the USA. It was backed into a garage.

Does the video show the accident?

Is now a good time to ask if ludicrous mode works in reverse? : )

Here's a $7000 USD fender dent,  granted its NY with NY prices,

https://cleantechnica.com/2018/05/20/heres-what-7000-of-damage-looks-like-on-a-tesla-model-3/

Basically it seems that the body parts are fiddly to replace, and the very fancy paintwork is a PITA to re spray and blend to the existing panels,

In short, If you want to keep you potential repair costs down, buy the black one....

If you have insurance it doesn't matter. But it might take a while.

From article above. Is this an official service center doing an insurance repair? None of the articles posted are clear on that point.

No the Service Centres don't do insurance work, Tesla approves a panel beater shop for repairs. In Auckland it's this place http://www.precisionautowerk.co.nz/tesla-repairs-service/
