Agreed. LEAFs are not available "NZ new", so if that's how someone "always" buys cars, and does it every three years or less, he is obviously able to sustain the frightening depreciation losses involved ... and not likely to encounter like minds at a forum discussing topics of interest to owners of a Leading, Environmentally-friendly, Affordable, Family car.

Yeah I was going to say, if you can afford to do that then you can obviously afford to wait a bit longer and get a Tesla or whatever the popular long range vehicle is in 2 or so years.

I’m no financial advisor but buying a brand new car every 3 years sounds akin to burning cash for no good reason...

I am quite interested in buying a NZ-New Nissan 2018 Leaf when they arrive. Can anyone tell me please when they are due to arrive in NZ and whether Nissan has decided yet whether to retail them new, and what the likely cost may be?

As this is a Nissan EV thread, I won't go through all the "good reasons" why buying a brand new petrol car every 3 years under manufacturer's guarantee has not in fact involved "frightening depreciation losses"! But if I bought an EV NZ-New, I know that the depreciation losses would be a lot higher than I am used to, mainly because of the very high initial price and the fast-moving developments for EVs. But, for the sake of the environment and the manufacturer's guarantee, a NZ-New Nissan Leaf is well worth considering.

I saw somewhere (can't remember where) that October 2018 was the expected time for a 2018 Nissan Leaf available in NZ brand new at the Nissan dealers.

I have no issue with those that wsh to buy NZ new, plenty of Hyundai Ionic and BMW i3 owners that have done exactly that. Those that can afford to buy new and trade up after 3 years are adding to the pool of 2nd hand cars which is very much needed so that those that can't afford to buy new can still change to EVs.

I'd love to have the money to buy a new 2019 Leaf with the 60kWh battery, I could charge to 80% each night and still get hoime from work with 50% battery remaining. Long trips would be WAY easier. ~350km range would just be so very nice to have.

For me, the average depreciation loss on a new car repeated every three years (or less) would be frightening, while my understanding of manufacturer's guarantees on petrol cars is that they usually come with commitment to high servicing costs. I hope to keep my 2016 Leaf for many years, save significantly on fuel and the maintenance/servicing of the 2000 moving parts I'd have in an ICE car, and thereby offset a depreciation cost which may ultimately prove not to be a "lot higher".

Elsewhere it has been reported: "Steve Greenwood is opening Drive EV, and he has already stated he will bring in the new 2018 Leaf - priced from about $47K with 40kWh battery. Forget Nissan NZ, they'll charge 2X that - you could get 2 new ones instead."

But maybe for the sake of a manufacturer's guarantee, and because of your personal experience in car buying, which I'd agree is much deeper than mine although I'm in my seventies, you will be happier to shell out the extra money for your first EV. I do hope so, if only "for the sake of the environment" and a succeeding generation. Meanwhile, a lot of people posting here have already decided the time is over for "considering"/ procrastinating. We want to get on with discussing the ways of managing the reasonably priced Leafs we have.

As for the prices of a new EV or a used LEAF, I just bought a ex-jap 2016 LEAF for 27k, not 40k. You would have to be hellbent on throwing money away to buy a 40k LEAF! New EV's are definitely expensive, but remember to add 15k to the price of the equivalent petrol car, thats at least what you'll spend in 4 years fuelling and servicing it.

If you look at the above advertisement you'll see that the price of this Nissan Leaf is $43,995. It's a Nissan Leaf Tekna with a claimed range of 200km.

I would far rather pay the extra to get the UK Tekna Leaf rather than a Japanese Leaf. From what I've heard, the UK Tekna is far superior in many ways to the Japanese versions, so buyers need to research this point.

Incidentally, how do you arrive at 15k for fuelling and servicing a petrol car over 4 years?

The 30kWh UK Tekna is the most expensive LEAF you could buy prior to the new 2018 becoming available. I bought one 15 months ago and paid $45k for it. The markets punishing NZ for electing a new government (as they do whenever Labour gets in) has lowered our exchange rate briefly, but that will come right soon.

You can get a 30kWh LEAF from the UK (Acenta) or the Japan for much cheaper. I paid the premium for the UK leaf because it was the 2016 model (in mid-2016) and it had a 6.6kw internal charger. The latter has proved to be very useful. I'm glad I did it.

If all you want is the 30kWh range, you can get that for around $30-$35k.

But right now.......I'd be lining up a 2018 LEAF with the 40kWh battery.

I've noticed that most of the NZ LEAF dealers are selling what appears to be a re-branded ZWET charger (found on Aliexpress here)

I'd like to get a back up unit. Can anyone recommend one that does 10amp and 16 amp?

They showed me the auction site with their filters applied (ODO, grade, etc) - amount of listings they could've chosen from was dropping to just about 20 across all of Japan!

They had no idea of why is that happening now. In the past they said - they observed hundreds of available Leafs on any single day.

I am feeling pretty happy that I bought mine 6 weeks ago! It arrived in Chch on Wednesday and is being complied today. Have to wait 2 weeks to pick it up though. I'm going to drive it back from Christchurch to Alexandra in 1 day :) Wish me luck!

For those that do have a rear view camera installed in your Leaf, do you notice that it seems to easily get wet?

I'm off to my friendly local Leaf Dealer on Wednesday to see what he has in stock. Looking to buy a Leaf shortly.

Thinking of getting a Gen 2 for the 24KW battery.

It seems to me that every Leaf has different extras included - what things are must haves (or very useful) and what are just nice to have.

Also consider the posts about availability and price rises what price should I aim to pay - something that is fair to the dealer, but also not me suffering because there is a short term fall in the supply of cars.
(I suspect many Leaf car owners are waiting for the 2018 models to be in stock and then going to trade up)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In Japan Nissan sold 3600, '18 Leafs in October, almost 4 times the roughly 1000 '17 it sold in each of the previous 6 moths,

not sure how many are direct trade ups though......

While it's always nice to go for bigger, better, ...; I must say that I am very happy with my 24KW Leaf. Three weeks of driving & I don't even worry about the expected range any more. I could easily do only two full charges a week with everyday driving 20-25min to work & back. It's only on longer trips / heavy usage days that I don't want the interruption of having to charge.

As to models, the S seems to be the lowest spec with the X in the middle and G at the top. While I don't care for the heated seats & stearing wheel in my X model, I do like the rear view camera with adjusting orange square path indicator. I guess the scheduled charge timer is available in all models? In addition, my radio has an AUX in, USB connection & CD.

With 12 000kms on the clock, I don't think the dealer went hungry when I paid him $20 000.
