SaltyNZ: Like Mercury Energy did with the Falcon?

By making this Ford Falcon "Evie" conversion overly complex, Mercury Energy may be deterring EV conversions.

Why did they choose / keep the automatic transmission in the Falcon conversion?

It seems bizarre since the designer mentioned he had to "idle" the electric engine, which I guess means keep it rotating when fully braked.

A manual transmission would have have made more sense, which is what EVWest in the States does. Basically keep it one gear constantly, from 0 KPH to highway speed

The clutch can be ignored most of the time, unless you want more/less performance.

Also the bus electric engine and designing your own AC controller and writing your own software seems silly, when there's plenty of already ready to go performance options.

Still if Mercury wants to sponsor an local EV conversion company, why not?

If anything their choice of a big heavy car that would logically result in limited range is the real head-scratcher.

Here's an Australian company, selling AM Racing AC engine

https://www.elmofo.com.au/amr-single-stack-250-90-ac-motor.html

"The AMR Single Core is one of the most dense and powerful electric motors on the market.

At a max power of 350hp, the Single Core can power a vehicle on it own or be linked to drive a single tire.

The motor is comprised of a large permanent magnet rotor and brushless DC stator, currently one of the most efficient ways to generate power today."

Completely utterly stupid connecting an electric motor to an auto gearbox. You loose lots of power due to the torque converter, and having to run a hydraulic pump inside the gearbox. You have extra weight, more parts to fail. Auto gearboxes often don't allow you to use engine braking (no regenerative braking). Needing a larger than necessary motor, due to not being able to operate the motor at anywhere near it's max speed.

They are effectively throwing away at least 30% of their battery capacity on gearbox losses.

"GM's NZD $8,050 electric car - Why car manufacturers need to learn from the Baojun E100"

"The Baojun E100 EVs take advantage of aggressive government discounts that bring the prices down significantly.

For example, the original prices for the two of the car cost NZ $21,500 and NZD $25,200.

Drivers can buy the car in Liuzhou at only NZD $8,050 after Chinese national and local incentives."

"Tesla bursts into flames in video captured by US actress Mary McCormack"

I know it's not uncommon for petrol-powered cars to catch fire. You just have to watch any action movie ;)

I was thinking about that. I know that Musk pointed out that the US has something like 500,000 car fires a year, yet it only seems to be the Tesla fires which make the news. But the better comparison is how many relatively new (5 years or less) petrol cars in the same price bracket catch fire each year?

Personally, the most pertinent question is: does a burning tire roll away from a Tesla fire just like a petrol one? It's important that we try to keep the electric driving experience as authentic as possible if we want the general public to catch on quickly.

Or Musk is wrong and plenty of other manufacturers cop media heat when their new premium cars catch fire:

An odd but workable solution. It may have reduced the resale value of the car.
