So I have come to understand US car rental is different from NZ/AUS in that your insurance is either none at all, or you take out a loss damage waiver at exorbitant rates.

I am wanting to hire a specific car (Dodge Challenger) and there is only one company (Enterprise) which does it, but their quote excludes LDW and it says I will be offered it at the counter (for a rate of between US$10 and US$29.99 per day) on the day of pick up. Not knowing exactly how much it will be up front is doing my head in.

Is anyone familiar with www.insuremyrentalcar.com ? They provide a LDW of up to US$50,000 for the whole period of my rental for just $36 (US dollars I assume). Is this sort of protection going to be enough?

I have comprehensive travel cover though my ANZ patinum credit card, so I am not too concerned about personal liability etc.

I'd be grateful to hear from any GZers who have hired cars in the uS before, specifically any who have successfully got around the rental companies' LDW fees.

kobiak:

I got rental car from sixt in US in November last year for 10 days (brand new GLA 250 with 15 miles on it). We also had travel insurance with upto 50000 NZD for car damages. However, sixt offered me LWD for additional $25 a day. And in the end, I'm glad I took it.

3 days later deer jumped on the road in the middle of no where and damage was pretty bad for the car and fatal for deer. No question asked by sixt, they just asked if we enjoyed our wild journey :)

I'd assume that I would have to pay for damage and claim it back from travel insurance if I did not purchase LWD in first place.

I might be completely wrong but if you purchase insurance from third party, you will make a claim after you sorted the bill with rental company?

That was my experience in Australia (hit from behind while stopped at lights). I paid the full excess, claimed it back when I got to NZ.

Fault is irrelevant too.
