Any idea how much you would pay for a 1992 Toyota Corolla 5 Door Hatch - 1.3L - Manual with 161000kms (approx) on the clock, signs of wear and tear showing on radiator, regualrly serviced, cam belt due at 165000kmsother wise one small ding and good history otherwise, kept in auckland not in a garage, not used everyday.
Turners valuation depending on if it is a liftback, GL hatchback, XL liftback or XL hatchback and from excellent conditon to poor condition range from $1211 to $2175.
I am buying this off my sister before she moves overseas, she needs all the $$ she can get right now so i dont want to rip her off, but hopefully a little family discount off the market value would be fair to ask for. she does not know much about cars really, and she will get it valued before she goes / sells it, but i want to do my own homework. she only answered the questions i asked, and thus it was no sales pitch but i equally dont know much about cars either and did not know all the questions to ask hence why i dont know the value myself. carjam calls it a Toyota Corolla Hatch M 1992, but i cannot find the M model, i do not know if M is refering to manual or if it is a model type on it's own like GL or XL but definatley a hatch.
On trademe I would expect no more than $1500 unless its in amazing condition, and would have guessed closer to $1000 for one in average condition
I sold my 1991 1.6L Liftback for $1300 a couple of years ago, at that age rust was starting to become a big problem.
If you get a chance to inspect it, check out the edges of the front doors, the top of the front pillar (A-pillar) for rust as this will greatly determine the economic life of the car
I'd be giving some garages a call and asking how much that will be.
Under those conditions I wouldn't pay more than $1000.
Think about how much you are going to have to spend on this car, how long you intend to have it and who would buy it off you. 20 years and over 150,000 kms are some pretty high numbers.
I would pay $1000. I'd expect to drive it for a year trouble free if you are lucky, budget another $500 or so keep it on the road and then junk it when the first major repair is required.
Cambelt is gonna cost somewhere in the ballpark of $400-$600 depending where you go. I think you'd be looking at about $1k taking that into account.
Crackd's synopsis is roughly what I'd expect. Use it as a cheap runabout for a year or until anything of any merit goes wrong. The cambelt is probably okay for near enough 100,000Km, but it's one of those things you take a bit of a gamble on, if it breaks while the engine is running then it's time to call the wreckers.
I picked up a virtually new condition radiator from Pick-A-Part compatible with a '92 Mirage for about $80 not that long ago, I got lucky finding one that was so tidy though. I'd also stuck a new alternator and a CD player into it, not that that really adds anything to the resale. That sold for $1500 about a year back and was in surprisingly good nick for its age, but didn't need a cambelt done any time soon.
Also speaking of the radiator, speaking of my experience in keeping a near end of life corolla on the road:
I found it really hard to get front-end parts for my corolla, from browsing trademe parts and pick-a-part, most corollas had only been scrapped when they had done serious front end damage (because their engines just dont die, thus dont leave mint condition bodies to be scrapped). This made it virtually impossible to get a good condition second hand radiator (or lights/indicators for the front)
You are forgetting Corolla tax. This is a very popularmodel. Without seeing it its a pure guess, but upper range of 2000ish. Cambelt will be 3-400, very easy to do on the 2e engine. The M is for manual.
Any rust in the pillars takes the price right down however as rust there is very serious.
