Hiya,

I was going to post this in the suicidal motorcyclists thread, but maybe by itself is better :-)

These days you can get all sorts of camera to go in cars and on bikes, I'm thinking of getting one more for insurance reasons than recording my antics :-)

Do insurance companies and the police accept footage recorded by them ?
I would like to have proof of either my own fault or the other parties fault if I have an accident.

Also who makes semi decent waterproof cameras to clip on bikes ?  So far my list includes :

Hero GoPro
Sony Action Cam
Panasonic hx-A100
Google Glass - inside the helmet if it fits :-)

And would there be any issues on privacy ?  If I'm going around recording my trips to work and then have an accident would I likely get in trouble just for recording without permission ?

No issues surrounding privacy I don't think. You are filming in a public place on a public road. Police/insurance companies welcome footage like that in the event of something happening.

Russia is a great example of dash cams, haha! I've been thinking of getting one myself, but can't really justify the spend since I've never really had a problem on the road.

Make sure you get one that only records on G shock impact or at the push of a button records the buffered previous 30 sec etc otherwise you will just end up with TONS of data. That rules out the ones you have listed. You can get an app to use your smartphone in a dash mount which uses either G force or just touch the screen to record, I think it even uses front and back cameras so you can see what the driver was doing when the crash happened etc. Not much help for your motorbike tho sorry.

You can get cameras dedicated to do exactly this and they are pretty cheap on dx.com etc

I've never had an issue so far either .. but every morning I ride among oblivious/careless/stupid/unprepared drivers and it would be nice if people can easily work out how I got splattered :-)

Is that really a problem though? If nothing happens on a trip, you just delete the data at the end of the trip or on a daily basis.

I've seen some cheap dash cams on DX where it automatically cycle the recordings, overwriting the old ones.

I guess its not a problem if you want to spend 5 mins every day wiping data, And setting it to record every time you start the trip, and stopping it at the end of each trip. Once you do this for a while you will get lazy and just not hit record when your "just going down the road" and thats when you will have your accident.

For me thats a problem and gets old real quick and thats why there are devices that automate all of that for you.

I have a pretty standard dash cam. It certainly doesn't take me any more than a minute to delete the recordings. I can record for several days before the card is full.
I do have to attach it to the mount each time though, because I'm sure as hell not going to leave it in the car, easily visible on the dash.

If you get one, Expect to pay over $50US for a non-copy version :)

I have the DVR-027 (same as the $55Us DX version but thats a DVR207) Nice picture and as stated the 32Gb card records about 12hrs rotation in 1/5/10min increments (selectable) with no gap between. I note the time of things happening and stitch them out in Windows Movie Maker.

Some of them claim to be HD but have funny resolutions etc and use interopilation

I started up a FB page for mine and a few other guys around the country to upload their funny/mad driving. "Dash Cam Driving NZ" if you want to join in the fun :)

They stick fairly well to the screen and shake/move with the car itself. So pictures not too shakey shakey
