Tomorrow. Went to Te Kauwhata today. Their fast charger is *almost* ready to go. It's right next to the highway. Really convenient! Hopefully it will be live in the next few days.
I won't need it much as I still have a 70% charge coming south from Greenlane in my 30kWh LEAF.....but for people coming from north of Auckland this would be a good spot to charge up after crossing the city and going over the Bombay Hill. For northbound people it might be a good spot after charging up at Tokoroa or Tirau (when those chargers are in) and by-passing Hamilton...and with enough juice to get past Auckland as well and charge at a quieter spot to the north of the city. Any 24kWh LEAF or better should be able to do 135-150km on a full charge - at least. A 30kw LEAF should be able to manage 180-210km. This morning I'd used 20% of my battery for 45km...and that was after the Bombay Hill. At that rate on the highway I would be looking at 225km before the battery went flat...and that was 95% motorway driving (granted - behind a big, slow truck over the Bombay Hill.....saved HEAPS of power and only cost me a couple of minutes.)

I done it.
I used this much power (from Greenlane in Auckland to Raglan). In a 2016 Nissan LEAF with a 30kWh battery at 100% charge when I left home. Took just under 30 mins to charge up to 99% ....so I had lunch, then drove home again after a short walk around town. :-)
306kms all up....with a 25-30mins break in the middle.

Wow it really is a different mindset you need to employ if you are travelling around in these short range EV's driving any significant mileage....its like limping around....granted you are effectively getting free petrol/etc, but I don't think (at this time in my life) I could be arsed with all that forced waiting around :)
I wonder if back in the day, when moving from horses to cars, they gave away free petrol ;P haha
Regardless - good to see this progress happening! And even better seeing that it is being used!
I think with these fast chargers it isn't so bad. As he mentioned above, he did a 306km journey, with a half hour break. I'd probably do that in a petrol car too, and the petrol to do that distance would cost me about $50.
If you have a Leaf, regular long distance travel isn't what you'd have bought it for, but it is nice to know you can. A fast Charger in Taupo is needed ASAP.
