I wasn't aware that the new season of Top Gear had started until a scene from the first episode was mentioned in another thread. So I watched (most of) the first episode last night, and was pleasantly surprised.

Things, of course, were bound to improve massively just with the removal of the obnoxious Chris Evans (whose presence made every scene he was in somewhat of a trial), but the improvement was more significant than that. The banter between the three hosts was still slightly forced, but given this was the first episode it was fine. Matt LeBlanc is certainly better without Evans' presence. And their "challenge" in Kazakhstan was pretty entertaining - on the strength of this first episode I'll certainly be watching the rest of the season.

Personally, I found the studio parts of episode one far less painful than those in The Grand Tour - these generally make me wince; it's only the non-studio bits of TGT that hold my attention (and don't have me reaching for the FF button!).

That said, the start of this season of Top Gear seems to have not done too well with viewership, but hopefully more viewers will come back when they find out it doesn't suck as much as the Evans era.

Of those who have viewed this new episode, what are your thoughts?

I really enjoyed it, was a vast improvement on season 23 and dare I say it every bit as good as The Grand Tour.
Is it being broadcast in NZ?

I agree, this season looks to be shaping up well. Rory Reid was a bit wooden at the start of the episode but seemed to relax as the show progressed.

New Top Gear? How come I did not see this in any of the tv listings I follow.

Time to "stream"

Easy to view directly on BBC iPlayer if one has a DNS or VPN service (which also has good apps for Android and iOS)... Just don't forget to confirm you have a UK TV licence!

Haven't watched it, and have no intention of watching it. I only ever watched it for Hammond/May/Clarkson and their comedy.

I enjoyed it. Actually liked it better than Grand Tour which I found way too scripted and forced.

Will watch more.

I may get shot down for this... but I found the last season of Top Gear USA to be a lot better too!

As soon as they went away from the clearly scripted in-studio segments it got a lot better.

When they make some politically incorrect jokes, let me know and I might come watch.

I haven't seen it, but thought that these three would work the best during the last season. You kind of wonder why they didn't use these presenters last year to front it. Especially as the new two fronted the top gear extra show. Also what even happened to the woman presenter. Last season it was all so disjointed. Grand tour started getting too repetitive, and killing the guests in every episode was just monotonous
