Can anyone point me in the right direction for a keyless entry / remote central locking retrofit kit? My weekend warrior van has central locking, but only with the key in the lock. I want to add a keyfob beeper thing.

Do all these systems work the same way (i.e. the $20 ebay kit will do exactly the same thing as the $65 jaycar kit), or is some matching of kit to vehicle/central locking system required?

There are many variations of central locking. Here is a rough idea of how the system operates.

The doors in your van have actuators to lock/unlock the doors. These actuators are usually two wire motors with a rod connected to the locking mechanism. There will be a module somewhere that will briefly supply power to them to lock or unlock the doors. The module will reverse the polarity to the motors to give the lock and unlock operations.

The driver's door has three extra wires connected to an internal switch. When you use the key it moves the actuator rod and will close either the lock or unlock contacts. This signal goes to the module which then powers up all the door actuators. It is possible that there is no actuator in this door. The key locks/unlocks the door and there is just a switch to signal the module to operate the other doors.

There are at least couple of ways to add keyless entry to central locking;

A remote kit that splices into these switch wires to give the lock/unlock signal, leaving the factory installed module to operate the actuators.

A remote kit that replaces the factory installed module altogether.

Which system is best for your van depends on what is actually installed.

My suggestion would be to take the van to an auto electrician, or a company that installs central locking for their advice. They may have a DIY kit that you can fit yourself, or can do the job for you.

The alternative is to get out your multimeter and play detective to figure out how the system works. You can then hopefully shop around to find a unit that will work.
