Press release:

As a result of the Delta outbreak, driver licences, Warrants of Fitness (WoFs), Certificates of Fitness (CoFs), vehicle licences (‘regos’) and licence endorsements that expired on or after 21 July 2021 will be valid until 30 November 2021, Transport Minister Michael Wood has announced today.

“While this extension won’t officially be in force until next Wednesday, I wanted to provide certainty to the public and industry that we have heard their concerns”, Michael Wood said.

“Like last year’s extension, we’re providing this extension to give certainty to the public that they won’t be issued infringement notices for using their vehicles appropriately during higher Alert Levels.

“Lockdown is stressful. People shouldn’t have to worry about getting fined for having a recently expired WoF if driving to access essential services or as an essential worker.

“It’s still the driver’s responsibility to keep their vehicle roadworthy and I urge everyone to regularly check their vehicle is safe. We’re asking drivers before they set off, to give it a TWIRL (PDF)– check your tyres, windscreen, wipers, mirrors, indicators, look for rust, and test your lights.

“Drivers still need to be medically fit to drive, comply with relevant restrictions and conditions on their licence and obey all road rules. Any licence suspensions and disqualifications will also continue to apply.

“For people who reside outside of Auckland, I’d encourage them to check their WoFs or CoFs are up-to-date as these can be renewed at Alert Levels Two and Three. Driver licensing and testing facilities will open under Alert Level Two. People with tests already booked will be rescheduled to the earliest possible test once services resume.

“I’ve asked officials to look into how we can make temporary extensions more quickly in the future, so we can swiftly provide certainly if any further lockdowns are required,” Michael Wood said.

Does this mean that because I renewed my rego this month (without any knowledge that it would otherwise have extended to Nov), I will automatically get a 2 month extension on it ;P

Registration is charged from the date the previous period ended, so I expect all this means in practice is they won't enforce it.

I renewed mine online last week too.  Hopefully insurance companies are just as lenient if someone crashes (while using their car for approved essential purposes) on an expired WOF.  They'd be within their rights to decline a claim but good luck to them with that PR.

IANAL but AFAIK there has to be a fault relevant to the accident that you should have been aware of. For example you slid off the road on bald tyres. A current WoF wouldn't save you from that.

If you are that way inclined it is a great time to be driving - hardly anyone around. My partner has been learning and practicing driving manual. Also with empty streets can test out the "special" functions of the new car :P

I believe it was during a news report early on in Level 4, police gave someone a talking to for using the opportunity of empty streets for learning to drive. They advised that it is not an essential activity and is not allowed under Level 4.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I posted about this in another thread earlier this month. This is what AA Insurance have indicated. https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=162&topicid=289410&page_no=1#2771858

Individuals should still double check with their own insurance companies.

Quoting myself to clear any doubts about keeping your car safe - including link to TWIRL (PDF) in case you've missed in the first post.

I have been wondering how surreal it would be (with the appropriate exemption) to drive from Northland through Auckland, without stopping, in the middle of the day with no traffic to travel further south.
