Looking at getting a reverse camera and monitor for our car. Has anyone had there's on full time as opposed to only when in reverse? Or is this a silly question? One of their photos seems to show a back view while driving forward.

Looking at a big warehouse on trademe and am surprised at how cheap they are at $46.

I don't think there is anything to stop you having it on all the time but may be a distraction. Also, headlights of following vehicle could be a nuisance.

I have fitted a few and the biggest problem is getting the wire from the screen to the camera.

You make a very good point re using it all the time. Noted!

My other worry is the screen on the dashboard restricting vision. I held a bit of cardboard up and found it a non starter.

May have to think again. I was not keen on messing around with a radio head switch out.

Interested in all opinions.

Have you seen the ones that clip over or replace your rear view mirror? While the screen won't be as big for rear view use, it gives you a pretty good indication + with the benefit of not obscuring vision by adding to your dash.

Had reasonable success putting a rear view camera on my daughters caravan for reversing and also 'traffic behind' monitoring.

The camera generates its own Wi-Fi hot spot which can be viewed on a smart phone. no monitor required.

not too expensive and can be sourced from any of the China.com sources

cheers

Thanks @tanivula. I have seen those and may well decide on one.

If your current car doesn't have a rev camera and if you can accommodate another screen, get something that also does android auto / carplay which also comes with a rev camera connection.

My wife will drive this 2012 Suzuki Swift the most and she has no interest in an android setup.

We just want a simple reversing aid.

We had a wireless one put into a Toyota corolla. The backup screen doubled as a rear vision mirror.

What was the 'backup screen', an over the rear vision mirror or separate monitor? I am interested in your use as a rear vision mirror.

I got one for my van. Its great. With a 7 inch monitor mounted down by the left knee. Its always on and acts as a rear view mirror, as well as a backing camera. As a result I took out the original  internal rear view mirror and replaced it with a driving recorder camera.

The camera is sizable, mounted on the back door, but I imagine you could mount it in inside of the rear window. Clarity is excellent, and just a small cable to the screen.

Bought it off Amazon, and it was recommended for trucks.

Looks like this

Many years ago I had something like this installed in my 540i that only had a one DIN slot for a head unit

https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Single-Head-Receiver-Dash/dp/B004HJ3J8K

Mine was JVC but the principle is the same.

The screen popped out when the ignition was turned on. There was a reversing camera that was physically connected to this unit (the installer ran cables under the carpet etc.) and it was activated by a signal in the reversing lights.  It didn't come with a camera but the installer had a good selection and chose one that fitted just above the licence plate holder.

Worked like a charm.
