Name and / or address. It seems you can't do it at the post office any more. Only on a massively long form  through the transport agency which makes it pretty much impossible as it ask a lot of stupid questions such as do you have permission from the owner to get this information yes / no, if yes please attach a file proving written confirmation from the owner. Even then it seems to be at the nzta discretion whether they give you the information or not.

Someone owes me money. I know two possible number plates to search.

The law changed in May 2011.

The only way to get it now is apply to the NZTA.   Provide a legitimate reason and you shouldn't have any problems.

Wasn't there a huge thread about this a couple of months back?

But yes, the official paperwork channel is now your best bet, there's now no easy way to find out where the bloke who cut you off on the motorway lives.

Yes your right. I was trying to find out how I could go about discovering the plate numbers of a few de-reg vehicles I used to own, but they wouldn't give me the information they hold about me and the cars I have owned.

If you know someone who has access to the NZTA online rego check they can find it for you.
That will include people who work for almost any parts supplier, workshops etc etc.
I have access to the look up function. But I work for a nationwide company and I do not know who the query details are sent to and I have no desire to find out until I am ready to leave! :p

And that would be a severe breach of the Privacy Act...

No, it's not. There are no restrictions on it's use. The only thing stopping me from doing it is my employers 100% work only web access.

If you work for a company and access that data for yourself and it is needed for your work, then it's ok.

If someone from outside the company approaches you and asks you to lookup some data in a private database you have access to, about someone else and you do it and pass that information on then that's a breach of privacy and a breach of the Privacy Act.

It's not a private data base though. It is very open.

It's open in what sense? Is it available to anyone to access it (anyone meaning myself and my neighbour for example), or just for your company's employees through a username/password?

If the latter than it means your company is authorised to access it, and most likely signed an agreement to have access to the data.

I have the impression you are mistaking your company easy of access to the data with "open" - those are very different concepts.

How would you feel if IlDuce up there in this thread send me a PM and asks me to provide him with your email address, and all IP addresses you ever used to access Geekzone, with date and times? The data is here, it's easy to access for my company's employees, but it's not "open" and certainly not "public".

Open as in the criteria for being allowed access to it are not much at all!
If I was the OP I'd just apply for access.

Users who have access to the motor vehicles register have to be approved and there is an access agreement including that the information cannot be disclosed to 3rd parties.

Giving the info out to "your mates" will get your boss/company at the very least disconnected, if not more, and my guess is that your job would also be toast.

There is a way to get the info properly and legally, it's not onerous, costs bugger all, and provided you have a legitimate purpose then there should be no issues.
