If I am with a different provider and I want to switch, would I

  • Switch to Kogan, tell them I want to  port my number over, and use their SIM.
  • Contact my existing provider once i have Kogan up and running and say I would like to exit their (pay monthly) plan.

  • Or is there some other way this has to be done?

Basically I don't want there to be any down time between switching providers.  I also don't know if porting the number automatically cancels my current providers account (which would be nice).

Just port.

Porting is the same as cancelling. Providing you do not have any companion numbers attached to the number you are porting you shouldn't have any issues. Also ensure you have paid off any Interest Free Payments attached to the number you are porting (E.G phone, accessories, etc etc).

I ported from Mighty Mobile to Kogan last December. Hardly any down time, it was all done and dusted in 2 hours at the most.

one NZ says that if I port they will charge me 30 days more (I don’t have any contract with them). There was no way around it so I would effectively pay for one month twice.

is that for real??

They can still apply the condition you just give 30 days notice.

However I have never seen this applied to me when I ported to Spark (and then ported to 2degrees soon after).

They did not ding me and I'm not too sure how they can do that when the asset is not active and they bill in advance.

I had a pay monthly plan with One NZ (nothing else, no interest free payments outstanding or anything) and I ported from One NZ without any issues. I didn't have to give any notice, nor was i charged. As per some helpful member's instructions, I just signed up with the new provider and requested a port. I didn't notify or communicate with One NZ at all.

The call centre is sticking by this 30 day policy - has there been a change? It's going to therefore be impossible to not be double billed for a month unless you do a whole bunch of navigation. And risk losing the number. Is the Commerce Commission on board with this?!

Pay Monthly

If you port from an Pay Monthly connection to another service provider, we will send you a final bill with any charges up to the time the port was completed. Please be aware that you are liable for any contractual obligations or charges associated with your connection while it is on our network, including a standard 30 day notice period.

Anyone else have issues with buying a plan that requires a SIM?   I went to pay and the popup Paypal window contains the following message:  "Kogan.com doesn't ship to this location. Please use a different address."

Im in a major city, its not rural or anything.

Update: I chatted to their online support about the problem and he said my address isn't on the area they deliver to, but he'll look into it.  Just got an email saying he'd arranged to have the SIM sent to my address, no charge.  Not sure what the problem was, but that's pretty good service.
