Poor most of the season, no excuses. "Our heart wasnt in it" didn't one of their players say? Leave the game if anyone plays with that mindset.
It was set for ridiculous season before it even started.
If George, the CEO, had planned to publicly shame Johnson into shopping around, why did he not do so at the end of last season so we did not miss out on some actual first class 5/8ths not Kodi Nikorima (ie Corey Norman).
So much like Johnsons 2 replacements last year George looks to have signed off on ANOTHER very average hooker in Wayde Egan from the panthers to replace Luke or whoever in 2nd grade.
This season at one stage we played 4 hookers in 1 game. Its absurd.
It seems to me George is trying to buy a value for money team but the problem is every signing is just average, if you fill the 30 man squad with value for money you are just going to have a very average team. And given the Coach, whilst good at straightening out simple errors and improving goal line defense, he is beyong saving at coaching offense.
Why is it we have no problem getting to the opposition 20m (red zone) in any game for most of the first half, to often come away with no points. We have no penetration. We have no set plays. We do not have a 5/8th capable of creating holes or drawing and passing for the winger to score, like we did with SJ. Even when SJ was MIA in personal attack of the line and everyone berated him, he was still setting up tries for the team. We are not getting that from Green and certainly not from the 5/8th who it should come from as he creates it by running at the line diagonally very quickly with the ball out in front two hands, he attracts his opposite but he also attracts their centre, he then passes either to the centre who quickly passes to the winger who scores unmarked or he skips the centre directly to the winger where somebody like Fusitua is capable of scoring those super man type tries.
But that shouldnt be our only offensive play anyway. Now its more like 4 hit ups, pass the ball wide with no penetration and then kick for an uncontested ball either giving the opposition the ball or worse giving them a 7 tackle set.
There is no players in motion, players running at opposite angles ie half offloads on the inside the running forward at pass diagnonally passes to the other half who then passes to a centre or fast 2nd rower who either is through a hole or passes for an overlap.
There are at least 20 set plays like that we could use and given we have players like RTS, and big guys like Maumolo hitting reverse angles at speed etc, we should not be having any problem scoring from 10m out.
Outside the 5/8th half isssue, SK just isnt a good offense Coach. In the Kiwis role, he relied upon individual talent and we played very unstructured.
But now he has implemented the Storm processes, we do well getting up the field due to a great completion rate and structured footy, but at the try line we have nothing outside continuing the structure which will never score points and thats definitely not how Bellamy implements offense.
I think SK needs a high qualiy offense coach. Not Jones etc. A specialist, somebody who knows how to create havoc, ie Cooper Cronk. Of course we have to pay overs to get somebody of his calibre to join our coaching team. But its necessary or we wont make the 8 until Cameron George lives by his own words to Johnson, "no one person is bigger than the club". Prove it Georgie.
We have the best back 3 in the competition. Fus got Dally M last year for top try scorer and Maumolo this year was darn close and of course we have the best defensive FB and a mighty offensive stepper in RTS who got the Dally M and the FB Dally M last year.
The problems were
A. Kata wouldnt pass (much like Kodi), we should have played CNK at centre, instead he is now playing in a grand final in his first real year of first grade. George didnt think at all when he released all our halves and CNK, what a waste of us buying him, him proving he his intensity and not playing him, much like Lawton, a very intense player which is what most of our team lacks.
B. George completely .... up the halves, way too much for CHT to handle as a 19yo rookie, out of position at 6 and no half back for 4 weeks. Then the most knee jerk purchase in history of Kodi who is now back playing off the bench as he did for Brisbane. George really just doesnt know football and hes trying to run the TEAM like its a business when his job is to run the CLUB as a business. The new owners should either sack him or get his hands off the team completely.
C. SK cannot implement basic set plays for the red zone offense. Not even simple ones. That has to be fixed or we will continue to fail. The reason we have such a bad for an against is because we are not scoring when we have a plethora of ball in the opposition red zone. If you are scoring often, the opposition does not have the possession or field position to put points on our defense, resulting in a positive for and against which results in finishing in the top 8. Just look at the top 3 this year and their for and against. Melbourne especially who we are now modelled off but dont have the knowledge on how to get over the line (or are instructed to just play structure still in the red zone). Even Cooper Cronk in his last year for the Roosters was putting on some sweet looking set plays. This is Cronks 9th Grand Final, incredible. He could keep going no problems and likely make another final for another 3 years. Plenty of players are now going on passed the 35yo mark. But I respect why he is retiring. Cant blame him. Canberra imo were the most mighty in unpredictable offense in the red zone.
