Kearney sacked

Ouch. Not uncommon I guess. Trouble is, the players score the points, most aren't newbies. One week they are poor, next time they win big. Is that all the coaches fault? Either the players have no clue, or the coach has no clue, or overall, we are not good enough. It seems to me we are not good enough. If we have the run of the green we can do well, if not, we can't

Hard to sum up.

Players have no clue on offense but are 10/10 on completing which use to mean winning, these days you need to score with high completion rates to keep the possesion away from the opposition and on defense most of the game, but as a team are above the NRL talent level per team. Again a faster/smarter hooker will make a HUGE difference as will a better 5/8th.

SK turning a team around on completions 10/10, defense 7/10, offensive coaching 3/10 (and thats where the problem is). Also SK is NOT a single player Coach like Wayne Bennett, which is where the issue replacing elite players with ok ones thanks to the CEO is not going to work. SK is a team coach. I do think he focussed too much on being Storm esque with completions, that only choked the offense out of the Warriors. You need discipline AND dynamic play on offense.

But dont be fooled thinking SK is the issue, we have Wade Egan and Kodi playing in our team because of the CEO.

The CEO is bigger rot than the coach. Time for George to finally live by the sword die by the sword with the words he gave Johnson "no single person is bigger than the club"

We need a Stacey Jones, which we have, Kodi. I missed the Cowboys game but I gather he ran the ball a lot then? RTS is the big name player, gets awards and so on, but in a real game what does he do? He gets the ball early in the tackle count, does a few fancy steps and gets caught. Yes he mounts up more metres than most but he's rarely in the thick of things when a scoring opportunity exists. He should play near the wing, get involved later in the tackle count, where his flair can break open gaps. My non expert view of this team is that we always play solid and reliable. A psyche like that means you always lose. Its like they never have set plays in mind, play not to lose, and accept that they aren't that good so try to hold it together. Ive watched the odd other game, and other teams go for it

Apparently they were trying to get rid of SK last year, but the bloke who manages him manages Blair and Green as well, and said nah if you do so, I'll pull all three players from the team. So they gave him a contract extension instead!? maateeeeee.

That article is really badly researched. Kearney was extended in February last year after the very positive 2018 campaign.

Mark Robinson bought the team in August last year and made it clear that the results outside of 2018 weren't good enough. From a number of reports he wanted to sack Kearney at the end of last season.

There are still a heap of issues floating around from Eric Watson's ownership. He wasn't willing to invest in the club at all and most signings were based around appearances not value.

There's a lot of nonsense in this thread about George. It's not clear whether he is the right GM but he has tried to sign quality players, they will not come. Chris Ratues article in the Herald shows a litany of players who wouldn't sign to play for the warriors.

An attractive coach will make a big difference. Kearney is without a doubt a quality man. He works hard and has great personal values but he couldn't develop or attract talent. His Warriors and Parramatta sides showed that pretty clearly.

A coach who can develop players skill levels and not just rely on brute force will make a difference. The warriors have a good back 3 but their props, second rowers outside of Harris and centres are crap. The halves are ok if they have go forward which the middle runners very rarely give them. Blair has looked a bit better this year but until they get go forward and quick play the balls nothing else much will matter.

Based on what you've read then, what do you think is the way forward?

Hire someone who is the best coach available, not the best New Zealand coach or cheap coach available.

It could be a young coach it could be an experienced coach but it needs to be someone who is aligned with Robinson and George and they then build a strategy to win. Recruitment, development and game plans need to lined up.

A lot of variables at play there. Best coaches tend to be from AU / UK. Maybe Fitzgibbon? take a risk? Really, it comes down to whether we think that the top of the crop are thinking correctly or not. CEO. RECRUITMENT. are they thinking correctly? are we getting the right players? more aussie players, more kiwi players? always going to be the dilemma.

I always think back to 2002 and the flair we had. Just a one off? how do we build consistency?  Nevermind the one off, we want to be consistency

The club has never had a firm foundation. The Anderson led team built up to a peak in 2003 then fell off a cliff. Cleary also built a really string group which McClennan wasn't able to keep going.

Watson viewed the club as an investment rather than being passionate about it.

Hiring cheap coaches like Kemp, McClennan, Matt Elliott, Andrew McFadden and even Kearney wasn't ever going to be sustainable.

This video from the Sunday Footy Show is worth watching.

If we've never had a firm foundation then, what in your mind is a firm foundation? I'm a young whipper snapper some 30 years old. Fa'afili and Wairangi Koopu to me is great. As a team representing a county, how do we go about our daily business? How do we get better? what is firm?

It's not a team representing a country, it's professional franchise. Names like Koopu don't matter in a coach, ability to develop players and get them to execute does. The two best coaches the Warriors have had (by a long way) were Cleary and Anderson. They were both young coaches but had come through a development process and had success. In the case of Cleary he also understood the challenge in NZ having played for the club.

It's the same as any business. Build a strategy, get the right people, resource them and let them work. When things don't work change them.

It's not rocket science but egos, money and general stupidity gets in the way. The Blues and the Warriors are both classic examples of the nonsense getting in the way of the football. They then go for quick fixes and the cycle continues.

curious to hear what your answer is to the blues ...  because it looks like they will win this year ...

Warriors look like same team no attack.

I waffle on and ask a lot of questions when I get a few beers in me 😅

Whatever happens, here's hoping we don't hire the wrong people again.
