Lawson solid in FP overnight, 2/10ths quicker than Tsunoda on Soft running in FP2.  Hope he is able to hook up a quick lap in Quali tonight and get himself into Q2.  Very impressive for a track he's not driven before.

Verstappen has some work to do if he is going to keep his win-streak going, the Ferrari's look slippery.

Yep. I noticed today when watching (not live) that Lawson was generally 6/10 behind. Learning curve etc im fine with that. Looked good at the end. Suzuka for Danny Ricc is a no go by all accounts. Helmut Marko is TOUGH, and lately not using his brain re Perez. BUTTT that may play to Lawsons advantage, HM is quite fine with dismissing drivers. If not, there are a few places Liam can go.

Outstanding quali for Lawson, into Q3 in only his third weekend with a P10 start for the Singapore GP.

If he can deliver points tomorrow then I think he's a lock for a drive in F1 in 2024.  He's made a statement already, continuous improvement the whole way along since he's jumped into the car.

Who makes way for him?  Has to be Ricciardo surely, officially said to be "on loan" from Red Bull until the end of the season when he joined Alpha Tauri, despite the unofficial line put forward by Ricciardo and his people initially that it could be a way into Perez's seat.

Tsunoda has been too solid this season, he's carried AT this year in a fairly average car. He may have been a Honda stipulation when they got together with the Red Bull teams, but he's outlived that question-mark now and deserves his spot in F1 currently.

Speaking of guys deserving spots, when is the vanity-project that is Lance Stroll going to be shown the door? He's had a good run but there's no place for nepotism at Aston when they have such a decent car that is being criminally wasted by the bosses' son.

Yeah Lawson is going great. How much can you allow for a rushed in rookie? And a new track?  3 or 4/10?

An option is to review Danny Ricc next season and loan Lawson to Williams to replace Sargeant. That can happen when Danny Ricc returns which will be after Suzuka

Tsunoda has been solid. But teams want more than solid. He has shown us his level, and its pretty good. Lawson "should" be faster, allowing for his rushed in status and a great example is ht new track.

RBR surprisingly cannot dial in their car. Worst circuit but a surprise. McLaren look great. Ferrari 10/10

My pick is Sainz, Lando and Russell

See how Max goes with a race tuned car to play with, but handling seems poor, hard to pass. Unlikely to be top 6 IMO. The issue is nt the other cars being faster, RBR has issues at this track.

Well done Liam Lawson!

What a stunning result! He must be giving RBR and AlphaTauri some real headaches about who to have as drivers next season. In the 3 races he's done hes been nothing short of solid. You'd think hes been driving all season with how well he's doing.

Yep, and you look who finished ahead, they are cars that Alpha Tauri cannot compete with, so he is maximising his result. I see more and more positive chatter from the commentators each race

From F1.com

With P9 for AlphaTauri, Liam Lawson secured his maiden points-finish in Formula 1 – it was also the first time this chassis has scored points in 2023 (neither Nyck de Vries nor Daniel Ricciardo scored with it).

• In his first three F1 starts, Lawson has finished 13th, 11th and ninth.

There was a point in the race where Lawson was 8th which would have doubled the teams point for the whole season. Near the end I was watching Albon chase him down,  he was right up on his gearbox then not sure what happened he fell back.

He certainly had some luck go his way today. (Alonso, Albon, Russell all stuffed up and should probably have been in front of him) Impressed though you need to finish.

Is anyone wondering if Redbull will drop Perez and put Lawson in the hot seat like they did with Albon?

Why not? Perez is a greta No.2 driver as he knows he's No.2. Lawson would fill that role too. He has made it clear he needs a seat, RB cannot waste it. Tsunoda, Ricciardo, Perez, plenty of options

Perez crashed into Albon. Perez got a 5 sec penalty and Albon got done out of the points. Liam's tyres were shot so unfortunately he wasn't within 5 sec of Perez at the finish line.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

That can only mean a full time drive. Newsworthy. If it didn't, there would be little point announcing Liam's future with Alpha Tauri if it was just a fill in drive as it has been so far. Factor in Marko's ability to hire and fire at will based on performance or lack thereof, and there you have it. I feel he will be AT full time 2024, and whether Tsunoda or Ricciardo are out is up for debate. Ricciardo is I think 34 years old, Lawson 22. Perez, hard to know. he could well be out and replaced by fast and capable and clean and cooperative Liam Lawson. Leaving 2024 to decide how long Ricciardo and Tsunoda will last

I hope Liam Lawson secures a contract with Alpha Tauri, it will be great to have a fulltime F1 driver from Aotearoa to add to the other Kiwis doing it on the international motorsport scene.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

https://www.crash.net/f1/feature/1036012/1/impressive-lawson-has-given-red-bull-dilemma-what-will-they-do

Mentions an option I posted recently, that he is loaned to Williams in place of poor performing Logan Sargeant. Williams can be pretty decent as Albon has shown, arguably a better seat than AT. AT can only run at a certain level, and while Lawson is maximising that car, the Williams can, and has, rocked the boat with its straight line speed. It gets noticed.

Welllllll ... not to rain on the parade, and I do hope you're right in your assessment, but the rumour mill is fairly strong atm that Tsunoda is going to have a contract extension announced with AT in Japan, at his home race.  Should this prove to be correct, then it's a Ricciardo v Lawson battle for the other seat.

I'd still like Lawson's chances over the aging Aussie, AT would get him for a song and he has longevity on his side.  Ricciardo might sell a few extra t-shirts but he can do that from the "brand ambassador" role he's been parked in for most of this season anyway.

I don't put a lot of store in the marketing-speak that surrounds team messaging, especially when it came to Ricciardo's arrival at Alpha Tauri.  They always like to paint a rosy picture and accentuate the positive, but this was the same Danny Ricc who didn't want to know about the AT seat over the off-season break when they eventually decided/had to opt for DeVries.

This has always been a marriage of convenience for the wider RBR family, and Lawson's outstanding performances have suddenly given them more options.
