I think I watch the Olympics/Commonwealth Games differently to you guys. I'm always on my laptop or doing other things while it's just on in the background because for me, other than the odd event, they are not must watch and I don't mind missing things given it is free. The adverts are fine because there is no way you will ever get me to pay $80 for a two week event that is on in the background (not including Sky's installation fee and you still have to pay for an HD ticket...). Usually the Games are not even on at peak viewing times so that's an even larger waste of money.

TVNZ are doing a good job although I agree, using Lightbox or offering a pay service online would strike a nice balance offering ad-free mutli-event coverage. I'm disappointed with TVNZ's Apple TV app not updating with a dedicated page for the games. The BBC did something similar with the iPlayer which I watched.

Did anyone remember Sky's FTA effort for the Olympics? It was rubbish and I ended up not bothering with Prime (or the Olympics at all for that reason). They didn't even make an effort to cover NZ athletes competing live.

Personally, I did not think the opening ceremony was very good and it had quite a few techinal errors throughout. Have noticed it with the events too.

Either a bit de-sensitised to them, or there are less during events.

And if there is, pretty clear the advertising agenda was to pump them out at the most popular watched thing

I have no issues with adverts to pay for the coverage. A couple here or there in a break of play is perfectly fine by me. A string of about seven or eight in the middle of play however is just abysmal and frankly not on.

As for the ceremony, I don't see why that couldn't have been advert free. At least the ACC on Duke had the heart to pretty much tell us "oh hey we're going to a commercial break but we'll be right back with more ripping on sandpapergate."

Watching the opening ceremony was excruciating – advertising every (almost) 10 minutes. Goodness knows if I missed anything interesting during the cutaway.  During the nations ceremony my kids tried telling me that India was in the Americas and that Fiji was in the Caribbean as the region change occurred during an ad-break.

If I want an ad-free experience, am I forced to watch a streamed version of the event(s) or is that peppered with advertising too?

And is this a pre-cursor to what the RWC will look like? If so, then a Lightbox subscription will actually be worth paying for to have an uninterrupted viewing experience.

Everyone moaned that we should have free to air coverage of sporting events and now we have it... Unfortunately those events need to be paid for somehow and the revenue just has to come from advertising.

I decided I'd watch it from start to finish & was glad I did.    A massive effort had been made to include cultural aspects in the ceremony & it worked.    As for the advertising I have no real complaint.    It was managed quite well - some countries from each region were missed in the march past but we got to see the NZ team with Sophie Pascoe at the front.    There was also some clever stuff going on with managing the marching in - having one of the surf nipper kids at the front helped keep the spacing between the teams just right.   The whole ceremony was great & tremendous advertising for the Gold Coast.

I thought the ads were mostly done well but there is always room for improvement. The problem I noticed was how the presentation suit moved away from the coverage, seemed clanky and not very smooth. I didn't notice any ads during the netball or hockey quarters. There could have been some but I don't remember any.

Good on TVNZ for acknowledging the feedback.

Do you think the general public will be so forgiving?  I seem to recall an infamous "We hear you" response following the "ad's after haka" fracas during the first Lions test.  It didnt seem to make any difference to the court of public opinion.

I am ok with the advertisements if it starts to split Sport from Sky.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

"The court of public opinion" is why I choose to post here rather than on Facebook or Stuff. The majority of people here tend to have more considered opinions and generate more interesting conversation and dealing with faux outrage is for the TVNZ social media/publicly managers to worry about, not me

As for the Lions, Sky subscribers regularly complain about Sky playing adverts. Quite obviously a difference to TVNZ's position.

Im not sure that would work. A poster here said just today that he wants MLB and some other sport stuff. Cheaper to get Sky. It will work for those who watch one sport, but 3 or 5 or 6 at x a month doesnt really work. TVNZ is doing the games, the ads are an issue, on here and elsewhere, it even generates a news article. Many hate Sky but if they host the RWC or Games, they dont charge a surcharge, they wear it. Yes, there will be ads, but its down to drawing a fair line. TVNZ and the games have not drawn that line. Is a monopoly good? No. (Although Sky has never been one) Is fragmentation good? Not for most

Bottom line is that sports costs, Sky or otherwise we cannot get past that

Sadly there are ads during the hockey quarters.  Not just between quarters but during the game.
