I'm more inclined to believe that Hamilton won't remain in F1 beyond his current contract.

(If he win's the Driver's championship again this year I'd say there's a "better than even" chance of him retiring - If he wins it in 2017 as well then I'd call it a near certainty.)

Time will tell :-)

I can see him staying if he's in a winning car. Its in their blood. I feel though that he would stop short of staying should the car or his age took the shine off his talent.

As you say, time will tell

Dunno. Money is a non issue for many elite athletes Id say, once they cracked a few tens of millions. he's very ego driven, a good thing, although personally I feel its excessive.

However didn't him and Rosberg now have contracts that end after the next two seasons?

Next year, it could be a lottery. But engine HP will still matter, although Im unsure where Merc HP comes from, the combustion engine, the MGUK, or a better turbo.

Yeah but maybe he wants a bigger jet.

They both end in 2018 and Toto hinted at both fighting for one spot.

Wow giving up hundreds of million dollars a year to drive like a maniac? I doubt it! I'd pay money to do things like that! Not many successful F1 drivers retire at 33 surely?

To me he only knows racing, ever since a very young kid. Ok, thats most of them, but its been full on with McLaren support. If it was me, Id race till I had to go, as I would love it. Semi retirement is dropping to a small team, as a give back to the sport, that type of thing. I'd bone up on a part of F1 that I could be involved with post driver. All speculation though. I feel he wants a crack at Shummies WC record. He has 3, he is 50/50 to get 4 (allowing for engine penalty(s) ). If Merc is tops after the new design 2017, it can happen. So thats a goal to go for.

I doubt Mercedes will have the practically guaranteed 1-2 finishes next year. The Renault and Ferrari engine are almost equal and the McLaren can't be that far off. Renault will be back in the battle after they rid themselves of the practically undeveloped Lotus they're using this year.

Quite possibly. The gap will narrow for sure. If Newey is all over it, RBR could end up narrowing the gap via aero as well. But its also possible that a team will be close to nailing the package than others then we have another 1-2 team dominating. If they kept a longer term goal, with MUCH less changes, that helps keep the field close, big changes give a field of those who nailed it, those who got it pretty ok and those that failed.

try as can, but could not find anywhere that lists how many power units Rosberg is on ... saw Hamilton's flash up on the TV just before Quali started ... anyone knows the state of Rosberg's unit numbers?

I don't understand - if Hamilton has so many engines why is he taking another new one to start from the back? Because he knows he can win from the back?

The three new engines came from FP1-FP3 as they installed the brand new ones to get the penalites out of the way; Hamilton was on his last engine (and has been for about 3 races) before Spa. The new ones are at the latest token spec and so unless he takes another engine penalty, he will miss out on the last 6 token upgrades as they cannot retrofit them to 'unlocked' engines.

Basically Hamilton had utilised all 5 'engines' before Spa and now has 3 more after new ones where installed in FP1, FP2 and FP3. Rosberg hasn't had to take a penalty yet as he still has one of his penalty free engines left to use, there is still a chance that he might have problems too.

Each team start with 30 engine tokens at the beginning of the season. Most of them are used out of season to produce significant updates before testing, then they keep some back for in-season development. Each engine component costs a number of tokens, so yes it is kinda like a slot machine, and each different component requires a different number of tokens... This was introduced at the beginning of the v6 era to stop the big teams continuously developing their engines through out the season and also to control the absurd costs; Mercedes are rumoured to have spent £500m on the v6 hybrids.

So you can get 1 engine penalty with 2 free engines? Wow didn't know that! Why doesn't Alonso do that? He must be on his like 3rd back of the grid start or something? I would suggest Rosberg do the same, use all the engines up and get 3 free ones one fine weekend when he can make his way up the fields easily. Surely that would be a good thing, and only good if done sooner rather than later. Don't know ...

In fact I would suggest to take 4 engines one weekend! FP1, 2, 3, and new one for Quali! Or is there not enough time to fit it in?
