Seriously though, how often do you hear anyone in New Zealand asking about the NFL score? Never from my experience. Yet you regularly hear comments like the cricketers had a good win yesterday, or the Pheonix lost again, what was the Warriors score last night, Carter played well again, etc etc.

DrCheese: It's the thinking man's football. Not sure why the periods of non-play are a problem. I guess most folks prefer mayhem where rugby players run around with the ball and hope for the best.

Statistics and strategy can be applied to any game and usually is at the top level. My impression is Rugby relies more on individual initiative and intelligence. [Troll warning ;-).]

how often do you hear anyone in New Zealand asking about the NFL score? when I was working all the time, many staff had NFL screen savers and wallpapers. As I said in a previous post my sons also love it watch it and talk about it. I used to drive past a Gridiron field everyday going to work.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Your experience would seem to relate to where you worked. I see non of this at work, either from work mates nor customers, nor friends or family.

Yes there is the EFL which still exists but appears just to be an invitation tournament and no mention of how many teams taking part.

but football also has the issue of global visibility. While there are teams through out the world, there's not much in specifics as to how many players and how many teams. It would seem it is struggling to gain a foothold anywhere outside of the US. I suspect the strong showing in Germany related to the heavy US military presence there during the cold war.

I've never watched a game of American Football, but I expect the writer of the article in Forbes a couple of years as referenced in a link in an earlier post has watched the game a few times. This is what he said;

the typical NFL game lasts more than three hours, only 6 percent of the total—eleven minutes—is actually spent playing with the ball and attempting to move it forward. The other 94 percent of the time is spent sitting, standing around, and talking about playing rather than actually playing.

The 12 minutes of action comment from NonprayingMantis sounds about right. True the metrics from a game of Rugby can be pretty bad too (not as bad a 6%) but you don't need to sit down for 4 hours to watch the game.

Whoever wrote that is writing utter rubbish. There is one hour where the ball is in play. The clock stops when the ball is not in play, with a few exceptions.

Very few games last four hours, by the way.

Depends who you hang around with. I have heaps of friends who follow the NFL religiously, we used to have huge Madden tournaments and gather for the superbowl. I also ran a Madden website for NZ based players and the users were all (obviously) huge NFL fans.

I'm not implying the sport is bigger in NZ than rugby, league, cricket etc but where you never have anyone ask you the score of an NFL game I have dozens who ask me.

The reason there is so many articles on the herald etc is because they just pick up the articles from the associated press. no one at the herald is actually writing those articles. someone over in america would be and the herald are just running with it.

The Football played with the oddly shaped round ball can go, and very often, for 90 minutes with zero scoring.

American Football is played for 60 minutes, 30 each way.

Whatever anyone feels about the sport, the Super Bowl (n.b. spelling

) is the pinnacle, the most important game in the sport. It's one of the most watched sporting events in the world. Why shouldn't it get some coverage once per year?

DKe: Don't know why you are making so much fuss over a sporting event in America which is also one of the biggest sporting event in the world. I prefer to watch NFL than football/soccer but I don't make a topic about the amount of coverage and headlines for football games that are happening in Europe and not in NZ. From the amount of response you have, it seems a good number of NZers like it.

You can also say as to why is it relevant to know that a foreign actor has died. Simple there are people out there that cares and that is why Hoffman's dead is currently one of the most read article in NZHerald. Why does Stuff have a top headline about Ian Thorpe being admitted to rehab?? Why should I care? Because its gossip to others. There are enough people out there that are interested from Miley Cyrus' twerking story to Knox trial. The two out of three links you provided are entertainment news. It would be nice to know what movies are coming up and check out their trailers. And who wouldn't want to know the latest gossip about Scarlett Johansson.

But we are talking about sports right? Well I asked myself why do tv news cover sports here in NZ when there are barely any people watching from the stands? Why should we care who won when a lot people doesn't even bother to come to the game. I agree that people from America here are fewer in number, but that doesn't mean they are the only group that watch the Super Bowl. Since we are expressing our opinion, I can't imagine European football to be a better quality than NFL when it has no video replay and players being divers and drama queens, but I still going to watch the World Cup.

If you get to know the rules and play the game, hopefully you will understand. :)

I think you missed my point entirely. My point was the Superbowl was getting a level of coverage that we don't give to many of our own national teams. I have no problem with it getting coverage but by the number of articles on the NZHerald site over the last day or two one could be lead to believe the Superbowl was a major event for New Zealanders. You can't tell me it is.

You ask why is it relevant to have articles on Hoffman and Thorpe. Hoffman is an actor that many kiwis will have seen and know of, Thorpe is an Australian who has competed against New Zealanders at the Commonwealth and Olympic games and other world swimming events.

I agree to some extent re your comment about attendance figures here, but you need to put that into perspective. While the minor games might have lower attendances the major games are always a sellout. We don't have the population of the likes of Europe and the US to be always able to fill our stands.

I think you also misunderstood my comment about European Football being top quality Football. I was referring to Football (aka Soccer) not Rugby Football, Rugby League Football, Aussie Rules Football nor American Football. There is only one Football all the others have another descriptor after the word football. I was comparing the standard in Europe to other parts of the world so far as Football was concerned.

When it comes to American Football I would say the NFL is the best.

Yes there might be divers and drama queens in Football, that happens elsewhere as well, but at least in Football you get play for most of the 90 minutes and it doesn't take 4 hours to get the game played.

I don't think I miss your post entirely. The level of Super bowl coverage is less or the same as when All Blacks won, Blackcaps won against India, Breakers won the championship, etc. If one of our national team is not doing well or lost, its obvious the coverage will be less, since we are proud NZers and we don't want to hear us losing. Super Bowl is the finale of NFL, of course it gonna be a bigger news than a normal game being played by a NZ team atm. Please share which national teams aren't getting their fair share of coverage.

Thank you for proving my point with those three individuals. Some people might see their story as being irrelevant to them but its relevant/interesting to others. Same goes for Super Bowl, its relevant/interesting to others. And yes I can tell you its a major event to me and other NZers even though its not to you.

Yes I agree European football is top quality for soccer, and no football doesn't generally means soccer.

How the NFL game is played and tempo are clearly different to any other football games. Of course the overall game time is less than the advertised, but considering that they have to plan what they are going to do next, injury timeouts, team timeouts, 2 minute warnings, setting up the play, etc they all add up. They are part of the game but you don't get to see most of that since you will be watching tv ads and the game clock stops. Trust me the teams are playing for 60 mins and more.

Going back to the amount of play in a game... whilst I have no interest in defending the NFL and their crazy sport, it's fair to say that the world's sport (football) also has a few issues with game time vs playing time.

It was stated last week taht the Asian Confederation are trying to find a way of getting more playing time in, as currently it sits at an average of 60min per 90min game.

1/2hr of wasted time seems a lot, but I guess when you factor in the stoppages that don't stop the clock (ball going out, players wasting time, free kicks being taken etc), it all adds up in several-second intervals.
