bought my first road bike (err ... flat bars!) the other week after 30 years of mountain biking. after a few rides the square taper BB is coming loose??? that's what is sounds and feels like. (Marin DSX 1 2024 from 99bikes)

since there's a few sales I'm now looking at some carbon drop bars ...

hopefully their BB will last a few more rides.

Yeah square taper really is tight or toast. I didn't realise you could actually still get them!!

I was never heavy enough to kill cranks but it was easy to round a square taper crank. The slightest bit loose and they're gone.

I've just had my SLX rear hub rebuilt under warranty.
It appears the generation of hub that I have was problematic: Shimano put a plastic washer into the internals on SLX, XT and XTR Microspline hubs, which fails and causes massive clunking and/or grinding sound and causes issues with ride quality.

Took it into the bike shop and they knew what it was straight away. A couple of hours and it was fixed.

The Trek/Bontrager hubs go through freewheel bearings if you wash too hard.  That makes alarming grinding noises.

Hopefully the Hydra is better sealed.

Yeah, being a heavier rider and riding fairly heavily as well, I am contemplating getting the eThirteen e-spec rear wheel, which comes complete with a heavier duty hub.

Just struggling with whether I can justify spending $600 on sale right now. I think the answer is probably not

Wonder if thats older models? Ive got 2022 and 2023 Bonty hubs and rims on two bikes that have done over 5,000km of hard riding and never even needed to look sideways at them. Been super impressed with the Bontrager Line comp 30 rims. Taken some huge cases on my heavy EMTB and still perfect.

It's a 2022 Trek Slash.  So presumably somewhere around 2021/2022 hubs.  The hub bearings seemed ok enough but the 3 sets in the freewheel kept chewing out about yearly.

Well...I'm sorely tempted to upgrade to electronic shifting...

XT Di2 12-speed shifter and derailleur (M8150 - specifically for a Shimano-powered e-Bike) on a mega-deal: Total $459 (derailleur alone normally retails for $600).

I have a $500 credit which is burning a massive hole in my pocket right now.

Do I need it? No.
Do I want it? Yeah...yeah I do.

I feel like it's another thing I'll forget to charge.  Much like tubes, I'm happy with shifter cables.

Derailleur is hardwired into the motor - no charging required beyond the normal bike charge.

Shifter is a coin battery that lasts about a year or two, I believe - but we always have loads of those around the house

It's the freeshift that I am most anticipating being the upside for me.
It allows shifting while not pedalling - spins the chainring while the back wheel is moving and allows shifting while descending etc.

Great on an eBike with all the torque that you tend to transfer to the chain when suddenly dumping gears for a pinch climb - can do that in advance with this system.

my other MTB has a Microshift shifter and if you used that for a while you'd be dying for a Di2.

However my other bike has a Deore shifter and you can just sneeze on it and it shifts. I don't think anything can be more butter than that. Ok maybe an SLX. Maybe an XT or an XTR. But i've never had those.

Problem with them is shimano has done away with the clutch and moved to a spring, so chain slap is much worse with it compared to sram or mechanical

I think this is last year's which still has a clutch. Hence the deep discounts to ditch "old" stock.
Shifters have remained the same so are still full price, but with the derailleur being 78% off, I am very tempted.

The new tech in the 2024/2025 version without clutch seems good, like the impact resistance etc, but I'm a clutch kinda guy...

And I'd rather pay $130 for the "old" Di2 derailleur than $899 for the new clutchless version.

New derailleur has arrived and I can confirm it is almost identical to my mechanical derailleur and definitely has a cluctch mechanism with the traditional on/off lever.

Now awaiting the arrival of the shifter and cable, so I can book it in and have it all fitted and programmed.
