Darn losing the toss, this is one very Green pitch. This could be a very difficult 1st day for NZ. Was an auto field first from either captain on that toss haha.
I'm ok with it, I feel they are a better team, so they can show it. Long day though, need to keep it tight and safe
I cant believe WI keeper just pulled out of that catch ! Luckily for WI Young was LBW next ball.
I think we could be all out for 120 here.
I think Blundell in the squad vs Glenn Phillips like not including Lockie Fergusson is a big mistake.
Brett Lee played many tests. But Id aliken him more to Cummins, Lee was more a yorker pace bowler similar to Starc.
Lockie has the best fitness in our bowling ranks, there is no reason not to play your best bowler at Test level. He would be unplayable on this pitch. He is consistently accurate now and consistently fast fast. Using Jamieson ahead of him makes zero sense to me.

Shame about Will's innings.
Begs the question, how many chances do we give a new promising player to perform.

I still think Devon Conway should have been selected over Will Young or Henry Nicholls. Conway has a better first class batting average compared to these 2.

Yep. Those two are not stars, but Conway could be. Its quite likely Conway may well be a top top batsman, or at least an obvious selection every game. Use him
Windies wasting this green surface and a new ball, all over the place.

Well that was not what you would expect on a very Green bouncy wicket in the first session.
Lack of patience is how I would some it up. Windies looking to "make" things happen instead of just bowling seam line and length.
I have to say our team looks really shallow in the batting lineup. If this was Aus bowling, I think we would be in very deep trouble if not already all out. Im not sure why we look so shallow, no Watling doesnt help. Mitchell is handy I guess.
I think Will Young is definitely our best opening option, hes walked out debut to an extremely green wicket, he got 2 of the best deliveries this session in a row, that is cricket.
But I think Conway needs to be in the line, I think the Windies was a perfect chance to blood him and Will Young. Nicholls will have a lot of pressure on him now, all the way until Taylor retires, which could be a few years with how hes been in his best form last 3 years.
Very strange for Windies not review an obvious edge, not sure how umpire missed it, I heard it live and thought thats out, only Bravo heard it. Odd. Latham got lucky.
Both Will Young and Conway are far more talented than Nicholls. What I dont get with NZ selectors is why they leave players so old before they give them a go, Nicholls, Young, Conway, all around 29 (I know Conway wasnt born here). Perhaps its just been because our team has been that good in last 10 years. Still, with Conway AVG 10 more than Nicholls 1st class, Nicholls has by far the worst AVG of the 3, and Young is an opener which in NZ on grassy wickets is as the commentators are saying, a lot harder than many other places in the world. Aussies get to spend half the year on concrete pitches at home, which is why they produce so many fast bowlers who aim for yorkers. But either way, openers will always avg 5-10 less than the best batsman in the team, which makes me often wonder, define best batsman, that is why I liked our last opener, he could face a lot of balls, which is the job.
I think Glenn Phillips at 23yo avg ~40 first class, will be our next keeper in all forms of the game once Watling retires. NZ would be in trouble without all these SA's. Watling, Wagner, Conway, Phillips, Im sure there is more lol. But with NZ being in the top 3-4 teams for a long period now, it will have increased crickets profile and produce great players, hopefully we wont have the dark ages (between Hadlee retiring and a few years into Ross Taylors career)
Either way, we need to be jumping on young talent and sticking with them, I mean obvious talent.

Nicholls has done better than his 1st class avg would have suggested, mind you Marnus Labuschagne was only avg ~42 in 1st class and now avg's 63 in tests, Im still waiting for him to fail, hes jumped ahead of Williamson to #3 and has only had 23 Inns so wont take too many ducks to drop that avg.
Latham is truely using up all his 9 lives today, nearly been run out twice, edged it twice, one was caught and not appealed (luckily the bowler didnt hear it). Either way has been a very ugly but gritty innings from Latham.

100% We have many handy players that we can use if we have to but we don't seem to foster "Young Guns" In Australia the top guys have to stay top otherwise they will miss out, such is Austraya's fostering of new blood.
Dochart: I think depending on how well Nicholls does this series Conway should be part of Test XI when they play Pakistan but I do want Conway in the Test XI for the next test in Wellington.
Yep, and then Nichols gets a stellar score so he's locked for another 4 years (slight exaggeration there, but that's my point.)
