My wife and I are off to Japan shortly - staying just short of 40 days.

Was wondering what the best options are for either a Sim cards for both of us or a renting a pocket wifi. We both have iPhones plus a shared ipad and would be looking for say around 20GB+ of data. And as we've will have little time between arriving at Narita and getting our shuttle to the hotel, it would be best for delivery to our first hotel (rather than picking up at the airport)

The alternative I guess would be to use Vodafone's $7 a day roaming on my 4G Vodafone pocket wifi, turn off roaming on our iphones and use my normal NZ vodafone plan (which has over 20GB of data per month). However, this seems expensive and I'm not sure how the well the coverage would be with this device.

Any suggestions / alternatives greatly appreciated.

And go the ABs of course - just hoping they make it through to the semis.

Depends how much data you’d like to have. There are pocket wifis you can rent (japan wireless is my go-to) that have unlimited data at solid 4G speeds. We were doing youtube/netflix in downtime, uploading photos and videos for around half a month while we travelled and got up to 70GB used for two people. No extra charges, it was like having a unlimited vdsl home connection with you all the time.

Sim cards might be tricky, most are a set number of days like 10/14/30 days, i dont know if you can find one that goes over 40. You have the added benefit of being able to split up if everyone has their own but the price adds up when you have to buy one for each person.

Best option is one of the large number of providers who rent portable 4G hotspots. Most either have airport pickups or will deliver to your hotel and you simply drop it in a postbox to return it.
