You know that they are about to announce a new iphone?

I wonder how many people purchasing something like an iPhone at Duty Free in NZ declare this and then pay GST as they're legally required to do?
I wonder whether the duty free staff advise people when they buy something over $700 that they're legally required to then declare it?
champakram: Last year I bought Apple Watch 3 at Auckland airport while heading to Singapore and I paid $504 and retail was $579
Long gone are the days that Duty free was a bargin. If you actually save GST on the normal street price you've actually got a good deal.
Even for many spirits and champagnes now you can buy them cheaper visiting your average liquor store or supermarket than you can duty free.
champakram: Yup I’m thinking new XS will be same as X price when launched so want to know the price of X so I can ask someone to buy new XS at airport for me
Now that will be interesting...
The NZD in September 2017 was ~73 USD, its now ~66c whther Apple dump all the Forex fall into the final NZD price, or are prepared to wear some of the exchange rate to keep the base price under 2K NZD will be very keenly watched,,,,
Pretty much the same equation will be going on in regard to AUD prricing too....

Totally correct - “Duty Free” at Auckland Airport is a total joke. SWMBO says perfumes and fragrances etc are also much more expensive there than at ordinary NZ retailers.
You can still get the odd bargain, but you need to be aware of what price goods are in the real world. I suspect many people are still of the opinion duty free is always a good deal.
Auckland airport generated $190m in income last financial year from retail (clipping the ticket of every retail transaction), an increase from $162m the year before.
I just don't understand why so many people spend so much money buying overpriced goods at an airport!
