Just in the process of purchasing an expensive wristwatch and I asked the jeweler for a tax free price. Figured I could pop over to Sydney for a weekend with the GST saved.

The price I was given included a $300 Auckland Airport Collection Fee. WTF? They charge $300 for some Schmuck to check your passport and hand your goods over?

Needless to say, I'll be staying at home now >:(

Who, the jeweler or Auckland Airport? The jeweler just said "It's an independent fee not charged by us, but by Auckland Airport on Tax Free sales".

Why not just fly to Australia and buy it there?

You'll get your trip, probably find it's cheaper than NZ anyway, get the Australian GST back on departure from Australia, and personal jewellery is exempt from GST/duty when you arrive back into NZ.

It's a new model in short supply so I don't fancy my chances of finding one in OZ. Good idea though.

[Edit] I also want to support my local AD

Maybe they are secretly encouraging you to buy a $20,000 watch instead of a $2,000 one.
