I am considering moving to the UK for a period of time (~2 years) and am looking at how I gain entry to work.

I would be looking to continue with my career over there (in IT Infrastructure/IT Risk/Cyber Security arenas).

A few of my friends have mentioned about not needing to apply for a work visa for the UK for the first two years, but after if I choose to stay I'd need to. From what I can tell, this only applies to seasonal/non "skilled" jobs.

If I was just able to go into the UK, it would make finding a job easier. But if I need sponsorship, that could complicate things a bit.

At this stage, not looking to make the move permanent... just looking to use it as a hub to get around europe on the weekends.

Anyone have any experience with doing this?

If you're under 31, you can get a 2 year working holiday visa. This is how most kiwi's do their 2 year OE over here. https://www.gov.uk/tier-5-youth-mobility

Don't even think about trying to work on a tourist visa, it won't happen.

Yes after 2 years your employer can sponsor you. This is not a cheap or simple process for the employer, usually involving immigration lawyers etc. It has to be proven a current UK citizen can not be found to do the job. So you need to have a fairly high skill set to have a chance at this.

Do you have a UK born parent? Or do you have a UK born grand parent (grand mother or father) - they do not need to still be alive?

If you have a UK born parent you will ordinarily be entitled to apply for your own UK /EU passport even though you were not born there.

If you have a UK born grandparent (from either you mother or fathers side) you would ordinarily be able to apply for a UK Ancestral Visa. This is a form of work Visa and entitles you to live and work in the UK for 5 years. You can renew it in perpetuity (I am on my 2nd one and are currently in the UK). In addition if you spend the bulk of the 5 years living and working in the UK you can apply for LR (leave to remain) which ultimately leads to ILR (indefinite leave to remain) which then leads to you getting your own UK passport and becoming a UK citizen.
