Just got an email from Uber that I will be able to request a ride in 7 new cities throughout New Zealand.

  • Hastings
  • Napier
  • Nelson
  • New Plymouth
  • Palmerston North

Very excited for this!

Wonder if this is why I constantly get ads for Ola, some other kind of Uber thing.

Ola is same price but the drivers get a much better cut from the company compared to Uber (15% Uber vs 27% Ola)

Do whatever you want to do man.

I just wish it was Zoomy expanding into the provinces rather than the dodgy Uber.

Given the drivers for one company also often drive for another perhaps Uber’s presence in these markets may actually make it more likely for the others to come. Surely the overheads of expanding a business model such as this aren’t too significant?

Well, there certainly are some.

  1. AFAIK, all three rideshare companies have got physical offices in the towns that they operate in. When I signed up, each required me to come to their premises.
  2. Zoomy puts you directly in contact with the driver / passenger; i.e your number is exposed. Both Ola & Uber mask your number by calling their office & then routing it to the other party.
  3. other things you & I can't think of.

Also, a local presence to be in contact with the council & get to know their local regulations?

Uber - the cancer of the transport industry.

Their business ethics are disgusting. Sure the taxi industry probably needs a shake up but the way Uber go about entering a market by flouting the law shouldn't have been tolerated.

The way they have structured the Uber Eats business is a good example of why I believe Uber should not be supported. No wonder food outlets are finding ways to avoid Uber's exorbitant charges.

Hopefully they keep pursuing the futile Uber Air Taxi dream. That will cost them millions, probably billions, that will never be recovered and should finish Uber off.

I would rather walk than use Uber.
